But at the same time, the new chipset draws less power so it kinda evens out. In fact, some people reported seeing higher battery life with X201 compared to the X200.

I heard and I have no firsthand knowledge, that the X201 runs hotter than the X200. When just surfing the net and listening to music, my machine is completely silent.

That may be, but typically the draw of the rest of the chips (with the exception of dedicated GPUs) pales in comparison to that of the CPU.

The most power hungry components in a laptop are (in approximate descending order): screen, CPU, WiFi/3G/USB, hard drive, everything else.

I forgot to mention that the battery life saving may in fact come from the LED screen used in X201 as compared to the CCFL screen used in the X200. But when you put the CCFL Flexview screen in X201, that battery saving is lost, in theory.

The X201's batteries are supposed to have slightly higher capacity too. When the X201 was released, a few website and forum reviews reported that the X201 battery cells have higher capacities (although they still comes in 4/6/9 cells configurations and are compatible with X200, it's the individual battery cells that got boosted). It's not known whether the reported slightly better battery life of X201 over X200 comes from the integrated memory controller, or higher capacity battery cells, or the LED backlit LCD screen (there is no such thing as LED screen, LED and CCFL refer to the backlight of the LCD screens).

Not to bring up an old thread, but I wouldn't mind upgrading my screen like a lot of you have.

Has anyone had issues w/ this screen? http://cgi.ebay.com/280397980104 $130 seems like a good deal to me since its not glossy.

I'm thinking of picking it up since it is actually a touch screen. Is that ok w/ a non touch screen laptop, installation wise? I have an x200 (not tablet)? And does it perform well outside? My current x200 screen doesn't (CCFL).

Also, is there a walkthrough to open up the laptop screen casing to install this? I haven't seen one and Don't want to break my computer.

I don't know how you concluded it's matte, but the 110 you linked is indeed glossy. It's the 120 that's the matte version. It's either hard to find at a reasonable price, like a couple hundred, or very expensive. I would suggest this panel as it's already had the touch surface and digitizer removed or it never came with them. You won't be able to use the touch capabilities anyway as the touch surface has to be removed for it to fit and it's generally a pain in the rear job to do. The one you linked has the touch surface and digitizer still on. I know this because I bought my screen from them. I only find the gloss occasionally annoying. Mostly it looks good, but your particulars may differ from mine. Other than removing the touch surface, it was fairly easy to install and the LCD itself looks great. Hit the training and support site. All is revealed. :D Good Luck.

Thanks. I thought it said 120, lol.

A touch screen would have been REALLY nice to have, but since it won't fit, I won't even bother looking at those.

I've never been a fan of glossy screens, but the price is really a factor. $50+ jump is a lot. I really use my laptop inside and away from direct light as it washes the screen out too much...

Hmmm... maybe I should consider the glossy (110)? This one?

Seems to be an OK price...

The one you linked is pulled from a system. Who knows what that means? The one I linked is brand new. Plus from the looks of it the LCD still has the touch surface on, which means you'll need to remove it. This entails taking a razor blade and cutting between the LCD and touch surface, which is most likely glass. You have to ensure than you don't damage the screen or break the glass, which would most likely damage the screen. Plus they use really strong glue. It's not like cutting butter. I don't wish to dissuade you, but for those reasons I think the other screen warrants an extra $20, my opinion of course.

You'd be lucky to get the 120 for an extra $50. khtse was selling them here for about $250. I've seen on eBay for $200 a couple times, but they went fast. Otherwise they're usually around $400. When I got my LCD there was no 120 versions available. I've been mostly happy with my 110, though I likewise prefer a matte version.

Thanks Fred.

I was looking for a panel I could simply drop in. I guess I'll wait for a 110 non-touch screen since the cost is so much lower.

Few minutes ago I successfully installed the Boe Hydis HV121WX4-120 LCD panel in my X200. The panel is brand new, flawless and absolutely fantastic! I acquired it from China via Obook: the Taobao agent. Total cost was little under 100 EUR (all prices are in euros):
HV121WX4-120 LCD panel .... 70,06
Obook Comission .............. 15,76
Shipping to Croatia (airmail) .. 9,02
Paypal charge .................... 4,37
-------------------------------------------
TOTAL ........................... 99,21

Everything took about a month: after I made the order they needed 10 days to acquire the panel from Taobao seller (http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=5500971029) and additional 17 days the panel travelled to Croatia (I have selected the cheapest airmail option, there are faster shipping options). The communication with Obook personnel was great and they did all the work. I can highly recommend them!

Actually... if you think about it, pulled from a system but still with the touch surface practically guarantees that the LCD itself has absolutely no scratches as the surface acts as a protective layer. I got one in "poor condition" for 20 dollars yesterday, but it still had the touch surface (scratched and cracked) After removing that, I had a panel that looked brand new!

If anyone wants a glossy or two, this seller is who I got mine from.

http://cgi.ebay.com/BOEHYDIS-HV121WX4-1 ... 2654wt_906

Mine was grade C, marked as having severe marks and scratches. After removing the scratched digitizer glass it was like brand new! For less than $40 I'd recommend giving it a shot.

only if you're willing to replace the hinges, antennas, LCD cable, inverter, LCD cover, and LCD bezel.

in short, yes it's possible but quite a bit more costly.

For those who swap their panel, I have a question.
Do you feel that the panel's color is a little bit too "warm" (as in, intensity of red is higher than green and blue)?
Mine exhibits this, but I'm trying to find out whether it is because the CCFL is not as bright as it's used to be, or an inherent property of the panel.

hydis AFFS and AFFS+ panels are slightly warm in color but white is still white.

dying CCFL displays typically start to look pink.

I felt that the white was MUCH whiter and there was overall tonal balance of the screen.. colours were definitely more accurate.
I could see shadow details and skin tone was much better. Does anyone have an ICC profile for the 120 (Matte) screens?

I have actually performed the 120 (Matte) modification on my Thinkpad X200 and the specs of my machine are as per signature.

IF you guys are looking for instructions on how to do it, it is basically very simple and you could look at some of the pictures at this link here.
There are annotations to the picture and they do roughly explain what needs to be done if you desire to perform this mod as well.

Adios!

If your X200s is equipped with CCFL-backlit panel, then yes, you can upgrade it to HV121WX4-***.

Hi,

I currently got T60p with UXGA IPS screen, however I'm considering also X200. So as I understand I need to buy the laptop with CCFL light. Is it still possible to buy a new one - I suppose that this type of the backlight is quite old. I already reviewed lenovo outlet store, but I have no idea which of them has CCFL. How can I recognise it ?

And one more question - what is the difference between "new" and "refurbished" on lenovo outlet? Should I be worried about "refurbished" as an used item with some hidden defects ?

Regards

X200 itself is an old model.
However, afaik, you can put AFFS CCFL-backlit screen into X201, although it is not as easy as for X200 (you will need to replace not only the screen, but also inverter, LCD cable and so).

So if I would like to update x201 with AFFS CCFL-backlit screen I need to buy LCD cable and inverter from X200 - am I right ? Could someone give the FRU numbers of this parts ?
