Can't get x60s or T60 to boot from retail Snow Leopard DVD
Can't get x60s or T60 to boot from retail Snow Leopard DVD
I've tried restoring bios to defaults using F9
I've tried changing up the boot order.
My X60s has a dock with a ultrabay dvd drive -- I can see the drive on the F12 bootup menu but it wont boot the Snow leopard dvd no matter how i mix things up.
Same story with the T60.
Is this normal? Do i have to create a custom Boot cd to do OS X on this thing?

Try another boot-able CD or DVD as a test..e.g an OS install disc or a recovery boot disc.
Re: Can't get x60s or T60 to boot from retail Snow Leopard DVD
right, i can definitely do that.
I just wanted to check that the Retail Snow Leopard DVD should be bootable on a thinkpad without need for some kind of funky bootloader or anything like that.

Hmmm, I don't think so. I believe you have to stage the drive first using an existing Mac/Snow Leopard setup.

Re: Can't get x60s or T60 to boot from retail Snow Leopard DVD
I don't think it is possible (I never actually tried ...). I think you have to create a Custom Boot CD (here) and then launch the Retail DVD. Or you can also restore the Retail DVD on a USB Key and follow this post to boot ...krymson wrote:I just wanted to check that the Retail Snow Leopard DVD should be bootable on a thinkpad without need for some kind of funky bootloader or anything like that.

Thanks for the replies!
I ended up burning a boot CD from hackintosh-india
From the screenshots, it looks like it's similar to iBoot CD that you've pointed me to.
it basically loads into a chameleon type thing that allows you to swap the cd for the SL retail dvd to install from that.
Just wanted to ask -- is there any advantage to creating a 8GB boot disk rather than this method?
I'm having some display issues right now after running pfix and I'm trying to pinpoint it's because I didn't do the regular USB key method or because of other reasons.

Re: Can't get x60s or T60 to boot from retail Snow Leopard DVD
I never tried this method, but it is almost the same except the fact you don't have to burn the CD each time you try a new fix for the installer ...krymson wrote:Just wanted to ask -- is there any advantage to creating a 8GB boot disk rather than this method?
In both method you have a /Extra folder with custom drivers.
I think it is easier to use a USB key when you own a Mac/Hack.
On the other hand it is more simple to use a BootCD when you only have a PC ...
But in both cases you have to know exactly which driver you need and why (it depends on your hardware, the boot loader you use ...)
Can you be more precise, did the installation complete ? did it boot with the welcome video ? do you boot from the BootCD or directly from your hard-drive ?krymson wrote:I'm having some display issues right now after running pfix and I'm trying to pinpoint it's because I didn't do the regular USB key method or because of other reasons.

Re: Can't get x60s or T60 to boot from retail Snow Leopard DVD
This is my procedure which is NOT working:
You can see how hackintosh-india works here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSvPvSJAemY
If I do it this way things are decent but I cant get video to work on laptop screen, lineout works but speakers dont work, and the trackpoint doesnt work, so I wanted to try Sebonious' method.
I dont have a 8GB USB key so this is my ghetto attempt at Sebonious' Method:
1. Boot from HackintoshIndia Boot CD and Switch to Snow Leopard Retail DVD
2. Install Plain Jane Vanilla Retail Mac OS X Snow Leopard from the dvd
3. Restart with the HackintoshIndia Boot CD and boot from the SL - installed HD
4. Register user bla bla bla
5. Install Chameleon from MacPNT Package
6. Copy /Extra from MacPNT package to SL - installed HD , and MacPNT to /Library
7. Run pfix from SL-Installed HD
8. Restart and stare sullenly at a computer which boots up into a blue screen -- which after a while fades nicely into black
9. cry a little
So I assume that running pfix on the USB key in Seibonouse's method actually changes the installer in some way that makes it different from the Plain Jane Vanilla Snow leopard installer.

If you can boot with the CD ... try again but with with kextutility instead of pfix ...
It is strange because GMA950 is handled by the /Extra folder ...
Did you get the Grey screen with an apple during boot ?
Can you boot in safemode (-x) on your SL HDD (without boot cd) ?

Re: Can't get x60s or T60 to boot from retail Snow Leopard DVD
Redid the whole thing once more with the Boot CD, using Kextutility instead of pfix.
I kexted everything in MacPNT except for TabletEnabler.kext
I moved the dsdt.aml to my root folder before running running chameleon
Same difference really -- it "boots" and gets the gray apple screen with the loading circle. Then instead of flashing into the desktop it flashes into a blue screen which after a minute fades into black.
At about this point, I get a cursor -- on a black screen! I can move it around with the mouse or the trackpoint(!) It even pinwheels at one point, but there is nothing to point at or click on.
what is going ON? O.o

Does it work in safemode ?
Just do be sure : You have copied /Extra in your root directory (and dsdt.aml can remain in /Extra)
Can you put the spec of your X60s in your signature ?

Re: Can't get x60s or T60 to boot from retail Snow Leopard DVD
Using a combination of MacPNT Package Kexts and MyHack v1.1, I got everything working except the internal display.
-QE/CI seems to work since i can load frontrow and check out theater trailers
-Audio works, speakers and lineout
-trackpoint works
-wireless works
I wonder if the display issue has anything to do with:
-I used an external monitor to set everything up(since that was the only way i could see anything)
UPDATE:
So I did some googling and "Appleintegratedframebuffer.kext" and "AppleIntelGMA950.kext" turned up a lot. I turned them off and rebooted -- voila, laptop display WORKS, but no QE/CI -- Can't use Front Row.
Then when I re-install the IntegratedFramebuffer.kext and IntelGMA950.kext with the kextutility and restart, I'm back to Square one -- Gray screen of nothing.
Looks it's either QE/CI with an external monitor, or laptop display with no QE/CI for me right now. Any way I can get QE/CI on laptop display?

Good news !
Did you tried the dsdt_stable.aml ?
Did you tried to add an EFI string in the com.apple.Boot.plist ?
That's what safe mode do (ignore extensions), so your display isn't recognized properly. Did you try to force the use of the dsdt.aml file on boot ?krymson wrote:I wonder if the display issue has anything to do with:

Re: Can't get x60s or T60 to boot from retail Snow Leopard DVD
Sebinouse you got it.
So I updated to 10.6.4 because i heard it might help -- it didn't.
But then i tried the dsdt.aml from MacPNT package -- BINGO, i got frontrow working on the laptop display!
However it was really unstable -- kernel panics every other boot.
Replaced with stable-dsdt.aml and I am good as GOLD
For the record this is everything I did to get OS X on my X60s:
Install Snow Leopard 10.6.3 from Retail DVD via boot cd
-burn bootcd from hackintosh-india
-run bootcd , swap for retail dvd at splash screen, partition GUID, go through regular boot process
Launch OS X on internal HD, do core mods
-run bootcd, launch internal HD at splash screen
-Run MyHack v1.1
-this installs core Kexts
-Restart and try to boot directly from HD to check if things are kosher
Install Kexts and further modifications
-Using Kextutility , Install all Kexts from MacPNT package except for TabletEnabler.kext
- (this should take care of wireless, trackpoint, audio)
-Turn off "use secured virtual memory" in System Preferences->Security ( to get rid of an annoying starting message)
-Turn On "startup automatically after a power failure" in System Preferences->Energy Saver (to get Sleep working properly)
-Renamed stable-dsdt.aml from MacPNT package to dsdt.aml and copy it to /Extra
I did NOT need to mess with EFI strings. Woohoo!
Everything works -- Graphics with QE/CI, wireless, sleep, power management, audio, trackpoint, SD Reader, brightness control, etc.
A few minor niggles remain, but right now I am very very happy =)
Seibonous thanks a lot for your help. I wasn't able to get pfix working with my method, but your MacPNT package and tutorial was invaluable

Brightness control is handle in DSDT.aml (not in DSDTstable.aml), you can install DSDTSE and then try to add it (see DSDT for dummies made by Silencer on this forum).krymson wrote:A few niggles remain -- Brightness control would be nice, as would better support for my ultrabase dock. Re: Can't get x60s or T60 to boot from retail Snow Leopard DVD
Laptop screen worked on both dsdt and dsdt-stable, but the "stable" one is just more... stable.
Unfortunately i noticed that now that my laptop display works , external display no longer works. I just get the White flash into blue screen, fade into black screen and then a pointer that turns into a pinwheel -- this is the same thing i got when i tried your method before, so maybe I had a working installation then as well, but since i was using an external monitor at that time -- I did not realize it.
I tried the command line commands for speed step you listed on the guide:
PStates
ioreg -lw0 | grep PerformanceStateArray
I got something
CStates
ioreg -lw0 | grep CSTInfo
I got nothing

OK so PowerManagement is the last step ...
Pstates are defined in the LegacyX60t.kext, CPU type and Macbook profile are in SMBIOS and CStates are in DSDT ... We have the same CPU (L2400 CoreDuo 1,67 GHz) ... CStates are the same for all CoreXDuo CPUs ... I don't see why it panics !
Can you boot in verbose mode and see what the KP is about ?
You can also try VoodooPowerMini.kext, it worked well for me ...

Re: Can't get x60s or T60 to boot from retail Snow Leopard DVD
Hmm.. I'm unable to reproduce the kernel panic. One thing i did was copy smbios.plist from MacPNT to /Extra, I wonder if that fixed it.
Occassionally will get a "still waiting on root device" hang after failing to load firewire(which i dont have) but thats it.
I've switched between dsdt.aml and dsdt-stable.aml , put smbios.plist in /Extra, and tried using VoodooPowerMini.kext with kextutility(which handles permissions), but while P-states continue to do fine, C-states are still not working. I've also checked my BIOS setting to make sure that SpeedStep is Enabled.
External display still does not work -- puzzling.
Finally, Brightness control is awesome at startup but stays at full brightness regardless of setting after waking from sleep.
mostly small problems but definitely wouldn't mind getting a handle on some of them

I did another install using Seibinouse method with pfix and this theory was correct -- actually pfix worked fine but my external display does not work. It was a really nice and easy install! =) However i still had to do these:krymson wrote: Unfortunately i noticed that now that my laptop display works , external display no longer works. The same issues as above remain but this was a very nice and fast install.
About the kernel panics -- they do happen once in a while on boot but rarely. When it does happen it seems to be around the time VoodooHDA or VoodooSDHC loads -- not sure if there is any correlation. I also get "waiting for root disk" hangs once in a while but that's even more rare.Seibinouse wrote:Can you boot in verbose mode and see what the KP is about ?

About the KPs ... I had the same issue : I guess it was related to the way pfix creates mkext file. I just run kextutility and no more KPs (thats the reason with I add it in the package).
About the screen : My external screen works vanilla in Extension mode, Mirror mode gives me Blue/Black/White bars.
The trick was to force Extension mode with the app "mirror".
One more thing, do you use the VGA plug of your laptop, or the ultrabase's one (it might be kind of a third screen ...) ?

Re: Can't get x60s or T60 to boot from retail Snow Leopard DVD
Just burned and tried it. The bootloader boots fine into snoopy but as soon as i load the retail dvd it gives a kernel panic. Theres a lot of stuff dumped but the first line is :"Version mismatch between kernel and CPU PM"
2 things:
1. If your external cd is out you may be able to substitute a USB key?
2. I think it's definitely a cool way to approach Hackintoshing, but it may not be worth putting a lot of effort into a boot CD for X-series since i just realized that many X owners are not gonna have CD drives. It would be more useful for T or R series owners.
Now a smaller Boot-USB key that doesn't require a Mac would definitely be nice though.

Re: Can't get x60s or T60 to boot from retail Snow Leopard DVD
Too Bad ! it panics !
1. I've tried (Restore the iso on a small USB Key and then instal chameleon on it). It boots fine but as I have no longer an optical drive I can't go further ...
2. It definitively would be great, but nobody has already done it. There might be a reason why !
As you put it, the "Small USB-Boot" method still requires a mac (Chameleon installer), but you can also install chameleon with a command line tool from AsereBLN Source.
I will try to see this PM issue ...

Re: Can't get x60s or T60 to boot from retail Snow Leopard DVD
Maybe the original "iBoot Supported" made by tonymacx86.com, or "BootCD" made by hackintosh-india.com are ok for the installation ...
As long as we have PS2 support and no KP, it's perfect !
EDIT : I have tried to make a new custom BootCD base hackintosh-india's file. I added PS2 support for my X60 ... the file is iBoot-X60t-v0.2.iso ... as long as we can install MacOSX (without external keyboard/mouse) ... then boot, run chameleon, copy /Extra, run kextutility ... and at last remove the CD to boot on the fresh install ... we have what we want !
