Use the BIOS, Luke.

You can change how the laptop handles function keys through BIOS.
* In "Default" mode, pressing F1 mutes the volume and pressing Fn-F1 activates the 1st function key.
* In "Legacy" mode, pressing F1 activates the 1st function key and pressing Fn-F1 mutes the volume.

Your computer is probably in default mode. To switch to legacy mode...
* Boot the machine.
* At the Lenovo splash press Enter and then pressing Fn-F1 to start BIOS.
* Select "Config"
* Select "Keyboard/Mouse"
* Select "Change to 'F1-F12' keys" and choose "Legacy"
