opppss! I was just about to buy one (literally while reading the thread) as they come really cheap. Sugar...
Half an hour ago I've bought an adapter from HK for a tenner (£) but I have to shop around now it seems for a cheap drive!

A question though - has anybody got the 2010 error after upgrading?

edit: done some research - these drives can't be used as they're locked

Only X41s will give you that error. X40s not.

To be on the safe side I would rather look for the Samsung models (HS06THB, HS082HB) or the Toshibas MK8025GAL/MK6028GAL, the latter are cheaper...

My 0,02 cents...

That's fine, 'cos I have an x41

I've bought a brand new Toshiba MK8025GAL for £40 last night (or should I say this morning) from a UK seller.
I have to wait for the bracket to arrive a bit longer, I rekon...

This was an old project of mine as I wanted something smaller for the plane trips to carry as my T61 are way too heavy.
Now I need a decent battery as well

Thanks for the thread and research, anyway :)

I know the feeling! :D

Could you post some benchmarks once you have installed the drive? It would be interesting to have a comparison with my X40...

Cheers!

Thanks for this list. I'm gonna go with non-ssd now after having my Kingspec 64GB die on me twice within a few months. The whole limited write thing with SSDs is ridiculous.

After reading so many negative comments about the Kingspecs I personally would never buy them. I've seen that many other PATA SSDs (Photo Monster, Sandisk, Lenovo), are slowly going down on prices. But really slowly... I'm tempted to try one soon, but no Kingspec model :BAAAD!:

Hello!
I have just bought an used X41, it should arrive in a few days... so I don't know much about it yet.
Anyway... at home I have a spare hdd MK8022GAA which came from a broken ipod:

Image

So when it comes here I would like to install this in my X41.
I red at the top of this topic that this hard drive has been tested... hmm, altought kinda slow since its rotation speed is at 3.6k but good for power consumption...

Can you point me where to buy the right adapter to install this drive in my "soon to arrive" x41? Thanks

Hi Layla!

You can get a ZIF adapter either in Ebay, like this one or from the Marketplace here in the forum.

Just reviving my own old thread... According to this seller, he has some MK1634GAL's that shoud work in laptops. I find the price not bad for the capacity...

I'm told by the current seller of a ZIF to PATA converter for the x41 here:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-8-pata-zif-to ... 1806wt_910

that the MK2431GAH will NOT work. I'm still looking for an affordable large drive to upgrade my x41 currently running an 80gb Toshiba MK8025. The 160gb Samsung HS160JB is supported, but VERY difficult to find. The jury is still out on the current HS161JB. BTW, according to the spec sheets for the two Samsung drives, the only difference is that the HS160 uses 512byte sectors and the HS161 uses 4k sectors. As I am using Win7, that shouldn't be a problem, but I am reluctant to order an HS161JB from China without some assurance it will work ok.
Tasurinchi wrote:Does anyone know which of these drives use 4kb sectors and which use 512 bytes? I'd like to put a larger drive in (120gb ideally, though 80gb is worth considering) but I really need to stick with XP as the o/s.
Yes, these are the 4k sector drives that I know:

-Toshiba 80GB MK8031GAL
-Toshiba 80GB MK8034GAL
-Toshiba 120GB MK1231GAL
-Toshiba 120GB MK1234GAL
-Toshiba 160GB MK1634GAL
-Toshiba 240GB MK2431GAH

The rest of my list in post #1 are 512b models.

Cheers[/quote]

What I read before is that MK1634GAL's and MK2431GAH's have a sort of Apple firmware installed that would prevent installing any OS. I once found a seller in Ebay claiming that his MK1634GAL's had this firmware removed and that they would work in any laptot using a ZIF adapter. But since the price of those drives is ridiculously expensive I didn't buy one.

I knew of the existence of the HS160JB, but never seen one in Ebay though. ZIF HD prices have increased lately... :( If you really need that much storage you may even consider this SSD: click me

The MXSSD1MNANOZ-240G you provided a link to looks impressive. But also is the price!
only $599 here:

http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/mx-tec ... s-zif-ssd/

I can get the HS161JB for around US$140. I think that is what I'll do. Although it will probably be slower than my MK8025.

There is also a 120GB Model from Match Xtreme, it costs around 250 USD here in Switzerland.

Well the HS160 and 161JB both have only a 2mb buffer, whereas MK8025GAL's is 8mb. In addition, the specs on similar Samsung Spinpoint drives such as the HS122JC shown in your table imply that it is slower than the Toshiba if I'm reading the table correctly.

OOPS. It looks like I misread the table. More MB/S is faster, that's throughput, right? So, it looks like HS122JC is faster than MK8025gal... My DUH <G>.

Since I want more storage so, for the money, the HS161JB is not so bad a deal. We'll see. Maybe I'll try out CrystalDiskMark on my new Sammy when (and if) it arrives.

That HS082HB is a single platter drive and the HS161JB is a two platter drive. So I expect the two will be very close in performance since they have same areal density.
