XP Pro-Boot screen at start up

#1 Post by catfish774 » Thu Feb 10, 2011 12:56 pm

I get this screen every time mt pad boots up, asks me if I want to boot to Win XP Pro or Recovery, how can I remove this from my start up? I tried a couple suggestions, but nothing has worked yet.
Here is my boot file;
[boot loader]
timeout=0
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

I am not sure what screen you are seeing. Can you post a screen shot?

I merged the picture post with your previous topic. We do not allow cross (duplicate ) posting on the forums. Also I broke the img tags in your picture, it was too large and there was no warning in the subject line. Please read the forum rules.

It looks like your system has been configured in the past for a multiple OS boot situation by the "partition(2)\WINDOWS" setting. How to change it to "partition(1)" without having to re-install to OS or move the partition is beyond me. A solution to a similar problem was solved by booting into Windows, running msconfig (Start/Run/msconfig), selecting the BOOT.INI tab, selecting the Windows OS and then clicking the "Set as Default" button. However, if there's only one OS listed in the boot.ini file, then I don't think you'll have the option to set a default.

A second "fix" I found is this: Access the System Properties utility (Start/Control Panel/System or right-click the My Computer icon and select Properties). Click the Advanced tab, then Startup and Recovery Settings button, and look at the System Startup settings.

Partition number is irrelevant.
I have my Windows XP on partition 5, no OS on partition 1.
Then again, I have also switched off System Restore for all partitions.

Catfish,

When you try Ray's suggestion, also click on the button for "Check All Boot Paths". By doing so will cause Windows to check your hard drive for all bootable OSes and clean up the boot.ini file.

completed all suggestions above. No problems detected. I had this same problem with another computer a few years ago and I just cannot remember the fix, but it was just the click of a mouse......lol

You sure you have the right boot.ini file? If your system has a recovery partition, it's possible the actual boot files Windows uses are stored there. A quick way to check is to edit the spelling in the menu of the boot.ini you have found. If on reboot the typos appear on screen then you know you are dealing with the right boot.ini file.

Try this
Start>Control Panel>System>Advance>Start Up and Recovery>Settings>
Fiddle with System Start Up

That's part of the built in HPA actually. It's a hidden partition on the drive and you can delete it but doing so would prevent you from resetting your machine's OS to the factory default. If you want to reclaim the drive space, aren't worried about emergency recovery and don't want to see that message, check out the info here:

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2006/03/1 ... partition/

ETA: Your boot.ini file is fine. This is something apparently specific to ThinkPads. I just purchased a refurb one and I was trying to get rid of the message as well -- I spent hours trying to find a solution to just hide that message too.

that is the cheap system restore sytem - that is what my system uses (I don't think it means msft system restore, it means system rebuild) the only option that I can come up with is to try EasyBCD and see what options that has. I never had any luck, I just left it on there since I prefered being able to access the recovery system.
