My R50e suddenly dead - nothing appears to be working

#1 Post by Wiking » Sun Aug 07, 2011 2:32 pm

Hi
I have R50e 1834-j8g model.
I worked on it and suddenly it was powered off without any blue screen or anything. Because I changed the LCD panel few weeks ago, I plugged it to external screen but nothing appears to be working. removed the battery and nothing. plugged it back and I saw light in the panel and I heard the fan working but no beeps, no HDD activity and then power off again.
What are your suggestions ? Motherboard ?
Anything that I can do to check and be sure what is the problem ?
Thank you
Lior

Try a reset, if that doesn't work remove all RAM. Does it beep when powered up?

Reset - remove the battery and AC adapter. Push the power button 10 times, and hold it down for 30 seconds the 10th time. Release and repower.

Did the reset. nothing changed besides that I hear the fan working and see the battery indicator. The lcd is not powering on and I don't see hdd activity at all.
To get the second ram stick and CMOS, I need to remove some parts. Do this too ?

Yes, remove all RAM. If the board doesn't beep then it is time for a replacement.

Ok, I think I found the board FRU: 27k9969 . By Google it is an R50e motherboard so I guess I'm right.
Now, where can I find new one with reasonable price ? I'm from Israel so shipping to Israel is must.
Thank you for helping... 6 years old, not bad but I thought they last longer.

EBay is one source. I would not pay over $75 though because you could probably get an entire R50e for not much more than that. Also take a look at T60's. It's a more modern machine and the prices are low these days. Sell the R50e for parts.

I have an T60 for about 2.5 years. great machine.
Buy another one is risky because I don't know when it will make problems.

Update:
2 days ago, I removed the wifi pci and the antennas. Today put all the things back ( except the wifi + antennas ) and it is working now like before. What is your guess? How can I check for hardware failure if it still has any. Would you suggest working without the battery? I think that the battery making all the trouble.
also, checked the wifi and antennas in different thinkpad and the wifi works fine so it's not the problem source.
Help me decide what to do.
thanks you for helping.

More update:
it's powers off after an about 2 minutes after loging into win xp .
Removed keyboard, ram, wifi card, battery, hdd (started gparted from cd ), replaced ac adapter.
Still, if i disconnect ac and then put it back, it's starting but after less then 2 minutes powers off.
Fan is working ok.
What else can I do?

Is there a dock connector on the bottom of your laptop?

$70.- for a new 39T0336 board is not bad (serversupply.com).
Mobos for 14.1" and 15" are the same. The 15" uses an extra interposer card between mobo and CD-cage to allow for the extra width.
The 27R2075 is the equivalent of 39T0336.

Yes but they won't ship to Israel if the order is less then 500$.
Found another deal herehttp://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... TQ:US:1123
If you say the equivalent, then I would order it.
Thank you very much mate!
