Looking for used X220. How can I ID whether it has IPS?

#1 Post by phubai » Sat Nov 12, 2011 1:43 pm

I've been looking at several X220's on eBay and unless the buyer mentions it has an IPS screen, how would one be able to tell by the specs? Any key things to look for? I really need IPS and would hate to Find I'd just won one without. Thanks!

Get the model + serial number from the seller, and put that into Lenovo's parts lookup tool. That'll show what parts the machine shipped with.

Did anybody ever find out how to ID IPS by machine number? I'm trying to sort out the IPS ones and just looked up one being sold as IPS on ebay. The Lenovo site gives these specs:

i7-2620M(2.7GHz), 4GB RAM, 320GB 7200rpm HD, 12.5in 1366x768 LCD, Intel HD Graphics, Intel 802.11agn wireless, WWAN option, Bluetooth, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure Chip, Fingerprint reader, Camera, 9c Li-Ion, Win7 Pro 64

Nowhere does it say IPS or "premium" which may be a keyword. Yet the seller advertises this as an IPS.

Any clues? Is this what a normal one shows as at Lenovo and the seller just upgraded or is Lenovo no longer specifying?

Thanks,
Steve

If it's listed in the tabook, it will say whether it's IPS or not, though not all are in the tabook.

OK, so need to do the manual lookup in the TA book. I haven't had to download one of those in a long time. Any quick clues on where to find it at Lenovo or here or....?

thanks !

Google ltwbook.pdf.

Or just tell us the type number.

When I google Itwbook, I get one for a T430U not X220. I'm not clear on how to specify the pdf list for the X220, but itwbook is not specific, apparently. Again, I've got various pdf files for the T4x and 5x series, but life has become more confusing since then!

Asking you guys to run the numbers for each X220 I find on ebay would be painful for all. On the other hand, if you have a list of machine numbers that will be IPS, that would be ideal. It sounds like the X220 did not have a specific model version like the T43p or T60p that came with IPS so I guess it was an add-on when ordering?

Thanks for any clarifications.

By far the best advice given for the particular set of circumstances IMO.

Suggestions:

- http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/ltwbook_2013.pdf (Withdrawn Thinkpads 2005 to 2013) Scan for your model type(s). If they aren't there, then...
- http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc ... 739_04.pdf (X220 HMM) Check LCD FRUs for the premium panel and refer to the listing of model types therein. This should be a more comprehensive list than what's in the ltwbook. If it's a CTO model then you'll have to plug in the model and serial number in the Parts Lookup webpage.

OK, thanks George and Ray, Rob. I had just found the right ITW book but it's still no help. Looks like I really do need the serial number. I see that this model is just difficult to sort out for IPS. Maybe I should just post a want to buy here.

If you have the full seven character model type and it's not a CTO, then you should be able to determine if it has the premium panel by looking in the HMM. On occasion the HMM does not list all types but it's a fairly good resource for this instance.

Of course this assumes that nobody has torn into the system and swapped out the panel... :P

Forgot to say thanks, Ray. I'll use the HMM, then, for X220 shopping.
