Do T61's come with an SD card reader built in?

#1 Post by Muse » Tue Nov 09, 2010 7:15 am

I didn't think so, but the one I just received yesterday has one, much to my surprise. It works with my SD and SDHC cards. Do all T61's come with the card reader built in?

Another thing has me puzzled. I thought the wireless adapters these came with had the wireless N disabled. Mine appears to be not disabled. Or maybe it is but I can't tell.

Here's the parts list:

It depends on the model.

All 15.4" T61's have the 4-in-1 media reader slot in front of the machine, below the palmrest. So YES for SD card support.

14.1" widescreen T61's had three options for the PC Card slot; 1) PC Card/ExpressCard slot, 2) PC Card/Smart Card slot, or 3) PC Card/4-in-1 media reader slot. So YES for SD card support on some!

14.1" 4:3 ratio LCD T61's only appear to have had two options for the PC Card slot; 1) PC Card/ExpressCard slot, or 2) PC Card/Smart Card slot. So NO SD card support.

Regarding the wifi adapter, unfortunately, many came with the A, G, N-disabled adapters. However, some did not. You must have one that supports N.

Between all the T61 models there were many, many configuration options.

All 15.4" T61 machines have the sd card reader. Other sizes do not, but some 14.1 wide models have a card reader as part of the sd card slot. Some have wireless n disabled. Some have n working. some are a/b/g

My T61, a 15.4-inch CTO system, had the card reader, but it was hidden behind a piece of plastic designed to hide it for systems that do not have the reader.

I noticed it when replacing the keyboard, as the palmrest didn't close correctly and it looked like the trim wouldn't line up. Once I took the palmrest back off, I saw the reader just sitting there. The piece of plastic was held in place with some kind of glue, so I pulled it off. Voila, I have a working card reader that also reads/writes SD and SDHC cards just fine.

I bought the laptop used, so it's possible I have a Frankenstein here - I'm just wondering if anyone else had this happen.

The wide-screen T60 machines do not have the slot, so the palmrest has a little cover over the space where it would be. Someone put on a T60 palmrest, but the cover should just pop out

Not directly on topic, but from what I've seen on the photos, 15.4 boards have 3rd mPCI-E slot also? At least so it seems...

Yes, the 15.4" T61/T61p boards do have a third mini PCIe slot, it's a half sized slot that is used for some rare options. I've been meaning to confirm the slot is fully functional, even purchased a halfsize wifi card to try it in, just haven't gotten around to doing it yet.

It's unfortunate they don't support mSATA, albeit modding an mSATA SSD to Mini-PCI-E spec seems possible (according to another thread).
