Porbably hopeless - using a R60 battery in Z61P

#1 Post by dado1981 » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:16 am

Hi,

I recently bought a used Z61P with a dead battery (I knew this before buying, because I'm not going to carry the laptop around). Than I remembered that I had a spare R60 battery which is definately working (I tested it in a R60 laptop from work) and tried putting it in my Z61p insted of its dead battery.
I thout that R60 is pretty similliar to Z61p, and I also looked at this site that sells a replacement R60 battery, and it says it fits model Z61P that I have:
http://www.laptopbattery4.co.uk/ibm-thi ... attery.htm

Well, I barely managed to stick that R60 battery to Z61p battery slot. I used much force, and basically had to slam it to fit in the slot, but it is now firmly connected, and the connectors are the same and connected. Unfortunately, the new battery still doesn't work in my Z61p, I only have that orange blinking battery light on the front panel, and it shuts down when I remove the power cable.
So is it possible at all what I'm trying to do?

If not, do you know how I could open the battery up (the correct way, I can always stick a knife or a screwdriver with a flat head in the middle of battery where it is soldered shut and force open it)? I was thinking of replacing the battery cells in Z61p battery, as they are probably the same as the ones in R60...

Thanks.

It doesn't say anywhere that their R60 battery fits the Z61p...

If you swap out batteries, you MUST keep power on the circuit board inside AT ALL TIMES.
If you fail to do that the control circuit dies.
Good luck.

There's also a possibility that the charging circuit in Z61p has been damaged due to the machine running for a prolonged period of time with a dead battery.

You won't know until you test it out with a *known good* battery.

BTW, R60 battery should fit and work just fine in Z61p, no issues.

FYI, ONLY the 9 cell batteries from R60/T60/T500/W500/R500/15.4" T61 & R61's can be used in the Z60m & Z61m/p/e machines. The 6 cell batteries are notched on the side as not to be swappable!!! If you jammed it in, you'll have to pry it out.

That being said, if you jammed it in and it's a known good battery, then it should work. (FYI, this has been discussed before in this forum.)

You really cannot fix the batteries. The circuitry inside needs to be powered continuously. Even a very short interruption is too much. Also, when they are heated (to connect the cells) they can explode.
