SIP / VOIP providers to use on cell/laptop
SIP / VOIP providers to use on cell/laptop
Hello, I just wanted to see any of our fellow Lenovo users are familiar with some SIP telephone providers to use Voip on the cellphone or on the laptop in order to call overseas. I am not referring to cell to cell both over VOIP, but from Cell to landline or offices overseas. I found a few on the cheap, but not many are cell-phone friendly, which is they main purpose of me checking these- to be able to talk on cell over 3G.
I found an app that works on Blackberry and apparently compatible with bunch of providers, but I am not familiar with any. If you see any that you know, please share your experience.

Thanks.

Re: SIP / VOIP providers to use on cell/laptop
We have a SIP phone with a Swiss telephone number here in the USA, to call family in Switzerland (or be called from there for local Swiss tariff).
My son-in-law registered the number in Switzerland with http://www.sipcall.ch
Then he got us a Linksys SPA1000 (Sipura) adapter and mailed it over.
The installation took all of 2 minutes, I have a wireless phone attached to it.
There is a different yoke available for cell phones: http://www.sipcall.ch/d/products/sipcal ... p?navid=40
It helps if you can read German.

Does Skype count? It costs nothing to have an online video call to the antipodes, or even to next door.

Nope, skype doesn't count. They charge higher compared to other smaller companies.
RealBlackStuff, yes, that's pretty cool, but unfortunately can't understand German.

I use X-Lite on an X200, and more recently an X220, when travelling and it works well over 3G connections. X-lite is free, but Counterpath also have a paid-for product called Bria which provides business grade VoIP features if you have a need for them.hyde wrote:If you see any that you know, please share your experience.

I've been using Skype for years and it hasn't cost me a penny. I'm still confused.hyde wrote:Nope, skype doesn't count. They charge higher compared to other smaller companies.

Killer,
[quote="hyde"I am not referring to cell to cell both over VOIP, but from Cell to landline or offices overseas. [/quote]
bill bolton,
Thanks, it looks like a nice softphone with bunch of features, but I am actually seeking connection providers (soft carriers) not the software vendors. I managed to find this with very reasonable prices per minute and it is also compatible with wide range of soft phone applications, both mobile and workstation.
http://www.easyvoip.com/mobile_voip
In addition to SIP compatibility, they offer old-school calling-card like landline dialing, which is useful in case we cannot access our mobile device/workstation and need to make a call. There was one more, apparently I didn't bookmark it, will skim through the history and report back..

Re: SIP / VOIP providers to use on cell/laptop
Hello there
I want to share with my experience: I'm using Switzernet, which provides Swiss phone number and possibility to use it from everywhere.
They provide 15 days of trial period and if you would like to take a phone, they will send it already configured. As all SIP accounts, it's possible to use it from PC or phone with any free software. You can take prepaid account type without any contract or private account type with contract and free calls to 23 countries.
They often make good promotions each month, you can check their site to see if they have any promo active.
By the way, I also use X-lite from my PC and never experienced any problems up to now.
Many kisses,
M

What about Google Voice...?
Cheers.

Re: SIP / VOIP providers to use on cell/laptop
Just wanted to came back and update, I bought an android phone off craiglist for a relative and installed skype & groove IP.
I set up google voice (major down-side is you need a US # that will be assigned to google voice, so no incoming calls..) and with groove IP now the person can call me unlimited wherever he has wifi (even when overseas) and if I am online they can just use skype to videochat.
At home I got magicjack, which works flawlessly for outgoing calls, but a bit quirky with incoming calls, the reason I got it was because it was on sale for $20 at local Rite Aid and it included 1 year of service.. Plus I can see who is calling on my TV while I am watching something because I installed it on my HTPC. A bit off topic but wanted to come back and report.
