x120e - If you own a x120e, please can you help me?
x120e - If you own a x120e, please can you help me?
Hi everyone, this is my firs post in this forum. I hope to get some help, and hopefully to be of help
I own a x120e thinkpad (05962RU). I have an issue for which I need some help.
When the computer is turned off, I hear an electrical(?) noise coming from the board. It's a kind of continuous buzz. It's audible when you put the ear on the back of the computer and I can hear it with the battery or AC only plugged in and with both plugged in. I tried disabling everything in bios... but since the noise comes when the laptop is powered off, the noise is still there.
A few days ago, at a repair center I replaced the motherboard, because it was dead (never explained why). Strangely the old one had too the same noise. I'm afraid that, if this is an electrical noise, it may destroy the board... like the first one. Or I'm being paranoid?
Questions, probably for owners of x120e:
Is this noise normal?
Can anyone, please, confirm if this is an isolated case? It's only me? Or your x120e makes this noise too?
Thanks anyone for your help.
I hope to hear from you soon

this doesn't sound right I never noticed any buzz, either with x100e, or x120e.

Thanks gear for your reply.
It does not sound right to me either, this is why I'm concerned.
The sound I'm talking about is audible only when you are close enough to the computer or better if you put the ear on the back of the laptop.
If you have an x120e, can you kindly do me a favor and actually check this in a quiet environment? With the computer turned off and the battery only plugged in.
Thanks a lot for your help.

Welcome to the forum!
It isn't right. I owned both the X100e and X120e, neither made that noise. I'd take it back to the repair facility and have it fixed.
Fat i mirë.

Re: x120e users - Please can you help me? :-(
Hi again,
Anyone else with an x120e that can help me, please? Just confirm if any noise is audible from the back of the computer when it's powered off. You should be close enough to hear it.
I would like to have some more comments before sending my computer for repair.
Thanks for your kind help.

Re: x120e - If you own a x120e, please can you help me?
Hi,
I would like to update this thread. Made a battery test last night to check if there is a battery drain issue. I lost only 1% of the battery power over night.
Too, I recorded a sample of the noise, I'm uploading it here for reference. after 8 seconds a pitch change is audible that can help making a difference between ambient noise and board noise. I hope someone can analyze it.

Thanks for considering this.

I checked my X120e and it's not making this sound. I would definitely get it checked. Your probably right in that is what killed the original board.
Is your AC adapter working OK? Perhaps it's doing something to the board that damages it permanently.

Re: x120e - If you own a x120e, please can you help me?
sorry for the late reply, meanwhile I sold my x120 too. I never noticed any buzzing sound like that (i checked the mp3) on the laptop (on or off).
But, I did have a Desktop motherboard (Asrock) that made easily audible buzzing sound, and I also read about many nvidia desktop video cards doing the same thing, and also power supplies. It was an issue in a silent room, and when listening to audio through the integrated sound board (always crappy, btw; use a dedicated one).
I think too, that it could be the power brick to blame (it's a switching power supply), so that could be some resonant freq (guess), or worse some electronic components on the MB of your laptop.
Also, please check the voltage/frequency of your wall outlets; you could have electrical noise, EMI, etc. If you can, use a good brand UPS or surge suppressor, and check if it solves the problem.

You've received enough confirmation I think...but I'll chime in and say my x120e makes no such noise either.
