Replacement Fan for T60 2613-CTO
Replacement Fan for T60 2613-CTO
Hello All,
My parts depot tells me the "CTO" in my T60 type 2613-CTO's number means "configure to order" and therefore they can't tell which of four possible blowers is the right one for my laptop. Can anyone identify it from this picture?
Thanks for any help,

I think that you can buy a bare fan for less money:

This may not be feasible if you need to use the laptop in the meantime, but would removing the assembly reveal the exact part number? It did on my X60 tablet.

Re: Replacement Fan for T60 2613-CTO
Any fan marked "discrete" in the HMM will work.
That being said, 2613 model number is associated with later C2D models, and it would be preferable to install a 41W6409 unit.

Paul,
Thanks for the tip. Is it hard to replace the fan in the blower assembly?

Re: Replacement Fan for T60 2613-CTO
When I exposed the top of the fan and still couldn't find the p/n, I decided to quit disassembling and post the question here instead. Looks like I'm getting good advice, too, as usual!
Thanks for the thought though.

I did the same thing, examining the assembly without removal at first. But I didn't seek forum advice (wasn't here yet), so I got the wrong part from Ebay. You're taking the proper, patient route I should have taken.
I considered looking into replacing just the fan part, but I wasn't sure it could be done without removing the heatsink from the processors. So I'm just doing the the whole assembly. In the meantime, TPFanControl is keeping the growling to a minimum. It's a great utility.

Sounds like the voice of authority. Thanks!
Maybe you can give me a tip, too, if it's not too much trouble. I often have trouble getting the big palm rest piece to snap into place properly in front. It wants to be loose either at one front corner or where it connects to the keyboard bezel. Any advice as to how to get it reinstalled right next time?
Thanks again.

You don't want that piece of advice from me...I've busted more T6x/R6x/Z6x palmrests than I'd like to remember...Andy wrote:Sounds like the voice of authority. Thanks!

So yes, I'm most definitely an authority on how to destroy a palmrest on first generation of Lenovo ThinkPads...

Re: Replacement Fan for T60 2613-CTO
I replaced my T60 Fan (Noisy after 5 years). I bought a Bare Fan on eBay from a USA Vendor that included some Heat Sink Compound.
The replacement was easy although I had to be careful routing the wire from the Fan Motor at the point that it turned 90 deg as it left the Fan Housing.
I cleaned the old Heat Sink Compound off of the CPU and The Heat Tube and applied some New Compound included with the Fan.
I use TPfanConrol with good results.

Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
Re: Replacement Fan for T60 2613-CTO
Paul, you should consider getting some Arctic Silver #5 thermal paste instead of the ceramic stuff they give you with the fan, it will help your cooling a lot, and only cost a few dollars.
Also, many prefer to mod their T60/61 systems with a T61p heatsink fan assembly. They have three heatpipes instead of two and do a much better job of cooling. They should fit any T60 with a bit of tweaking. I have several of them if you (or another member) is interested in doing the mod.

Re: Replacement Fan for T60 2613-CTO
I was going to ask if those three-pipe heatsinks make sense for T60/T61's without the discrete graphics. Thanks for mentioning that. I'll PM you about getting a couple.
Re: Replacement Fan for T60 2613-CTO
I got the cooling unit replaced today. What a relief.
If anyone wants the old one, please PM me to arrange shipping.
Thanks for everyone's help!
