T60p: need 64bit CPU, what are the options?
T60p: need 64bit CPU, what are the options?
Hello,
I need upgrading my old T60p with 64bit CPU (software requirements). I know that T5500 or T7200 would fit but
1) what are the best options in performance and performance/bucks ratio?
2) is it possible to replace T2600 with processor running higher than 667MHz?
3) will it be neccessary to replace some other parts when changing the CPU?
4) any other things/restrictions I should know/consider/pay attention to before I decide to upgrade?
I would appreciate your help. My config is 14" T60p, T2600, 2GB
Thank you,
geos

Re: T60p: need 64bit CPU, what are the options?
Cheapest option would be T5500 or T5600 but the best bang for the buck option would be T7200. You can go for T7400 (slightly more expensive) or T7600 which is the fastest one available on T60/p maschines but those cost insane money.
You need only new dash of thermal paste, get a good one, like AS5 or the like.

Re: T60p: need 64bit CPU, what are the options?
I have the T5500 in my R60e. They can do x64 and for general usage, it's fine. I'll point out for general usage a SSD is much more likely to make your system seem faster than the CPU.

Coming from a former SSD user. This is honestly a very good way to speed up your system!ZaZ wrote:I have the T5500 in my R60e. They can do x64 and for general usage, it's fine. I'll point out for general usage a SSD is much more likely to make your system seem faster than the CPU.
Oh I miss my SSD

the man needs a 64bit OS apparently, not just a speed increase..I need upgrading my old T60p with 64bit CPU (software requirements).

Re: T60p: need 64bit CPU, what are the options?
yes. at this moment the highest priority is 64bit CPU. I also wanted to change the display but from what I have read it looks that there is no IPS option for this 14.1" T60p model (is that true?)BillMorrow wrote:the man needs a 64bit OS apparently, not just a speed increase..
so, 667MHz Socket M CPUs are the only option to look for, right?
thank you,

Re: T60p: need 64bit CPU, what are the options?
An IPS screen is an option only on the 15" 4:3 aspect ratio ThinkPads. The standard XGA LCD is not IPS, but the SXGA+ and UXGA LCDs are IPS.geos wrote: also wanted to change the display but from what I have read it looks that there is no IPS option for this 14.1" T60p model (is that true?)

I believe you could swap in a 4:3 T61 board. That would get you access to faster CPUs and FSBs, 8GB of memory and SATA II speeds with Middelton's BIOS hack.

Re: T60p: need 64bit CPU, what are the options?
Thanks! Is this generally true for any T61/T61p motherboard, ie. that it can access 8GB of memory and use SATA II hack?ZaZ wrote:I believe you could swap in a 4:3 T61 board. That would get you access to faster CPUs and FSBs, 8GB of memory and SATA II speeds with Middelton's BIOS hack.

Re: T60p: need 64bit CPU, what are the options?
Yes, any T61 mobo can handle 8GB RAM.
You need a Core 2 Duo CPU, as well as a 64-bit OS.
Only mobos from a T61 with 14.1" Standard 4:3 LCD will fit in a T60 base (after some small modifications).
All other T61 boards are too big.
