T60 randomly sleeps or shuts down

#1 Post by burns334 » Sat Apr 09, 2011 4:01 pm

My machine is a T60 2007-57U and it just randomly hibernates or shuts down. Seems to happen the most when watching 5 or 6 minutes online videos but not predicable. I'll sometimes get the message that it is preparing to hibernate and that's what it does, it can be awakened by hitting the start up button and it comes right up to user screen. Other times it just shutsdown with out a hint it will happen. It always restarts with no problem. Any ideas out there?

any indication that it's overheating and thermal protection is kicking in? might want to pull the keyboard and clean out the dust bunnies.

I put this T60 together about a year ago and don't think it should be dusty inside but I thought it might be a thermal problem, I have a utility that monitors temp on another machine (I forget its name) but I think I will install and see if anything odd is going on. The bottom of the machine is a little warm when it happens.

it's amazing how quick dust builds up. a bit of electrostatic attraction is like a magnet. you might also consider some new thermal paste if you decide it's a temp issue. i only use arctic silver 5.

something else to consider is some weird setting in your power profile. can't hurt to go through them and check.

Sarbin, power options did seem screwy, I changed all settings when plugged in to NEVER and I vacuumed out the fan outlet without removing the keyboard and all was good today, no shutdowns to sleepyies so we will see, thanks

hope it keeps behaving for you. :thumbs-UP:
if you need to do it, pulling the keyboard to vacuum things out is really straightforward.

Also, vacuuming makes the fans run a tiny bit quieter, at least it did for me.

The T60 still has the same random shutdowns and I am going to open it up and clean out the fan and put some new artic silver on the processor as detailed in the factory manual but what do I do on the extension of the fan assemble on to the other chip? Manual does not saw anything about that, does it get a new thermal pad? Any help would be appreciated.

TIA burns

I have the same problem with my T60. I'm sure it's not a heat / dust problem, the cpu is always below 50C and I installed the T60 mainboard just recently.

Do you also have Intel graphics and winXP? Perhaps it's a driver or software related problem.

Yesterday I switched to Win7 and video performance is much better. Now I can watch 1080p MKV's and Youtube HD movies, on WinXP they would always stutter.
I will pay attention if the random sleep/shutdown issue still occurs.

I'm running on Win7 for a couple of weeks now, and still no strange standby issues.
