Need advice with R40 2681 component swaps

#1 Post by pdwest64 » Fri Apr 20, 2012 9:35 pm

Hello all:
I recently got hooked on thinkpads after an IT friend of mine gave me a G40 and R40 for free. I have kinda fallen in love with them  and grabbed some other items, the one in question here is a R40 2681-Q6U with the coveted SXGA LCD and 2.4GHz CPU. But... the ethernet port is dead. So, I have a parts R40 2681-KLU bottom with matching specs (ATI 7500 32MB, sec chip) coming to do a swap.

My question is- I have read that the computer may be "expecting" a certain list of components from an EEPROM file when it boots up. Am I going to have a problem after transferring the CPU to the new motherboard and rebuilding the laptop? I have been building desktops since '93 but am new to laptops.
P.S. Have a 40GB HDD with WinXP/SP3 and latest BIOS and ECP already on it.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Pdubya

Welcome to the forum!

The CPU swap is plug & play between these two.

While you're at it, you may want to transfer Q6U's SXGA+ LCD assembly onto the other base as well... at least that's what I would do.

Happy swapping.

Thanks for the quick reply! Roger on the top swap, that was my intention as I love the SXGA screen.

The first R40 I got free is a 2681-K8U that I have been using to run Ubuntu and loving it so far. I got lucky when I purchased the second 2681-Q6U in that it was complete with XP,etc. But the Q6U is the one with the bad ethernet port unfortunately, so I just got the KLU to use as the "bottom" (I busted the wireless door screw mount on the Q6U, DOH!) and will pull the Q6U CPU for the swap.
Unfortunately, the G40 has no internet capability at all, so I am going to cannibalize it for screws and whatever else is useful.

Thanks again.

Pushing my luck here, but is there any hope of using a minipci wireless card that is "n" capable? So far, even with the latest ECP and BIOS it's the old 1802 no go. I can live with "g" if that is all it can handle, but thought I would ask while I was thinking about it tonight.
Just saw the reply on new wireless post above.
