Anyone with warranty upgrade experience?

#1 Post by Blzut3 » Wed Apr 11, 2012 6:13 pm

My brother bought a W700ds used about a month ago. The base 3yr onsite warranty on it is due to expire on May 25th and so we're looking to upgrade it to the 5yr option. Initially we called shortly after we got the unit and the represenitive on the phone told us that the 5yr upgrade was available for $199. Additionally she claimed that it would give 5 additional years on the 3yr. (On which I called BS despite her repeated insistence that this model was a special case.) But regardless we figured that $199 for an extra 2 yrs at least is not that bad.

Today we called and the new representitive told us that since the laptop is more than 2 yrs old, the post warranty maintanance agreements are the only option we have. Without onsite service that comes out to $259 for an additional 2 yrs.

Does anyone know what Lenovo's official policy is on when warranty extensions can be purchased and when purchasing the Post-warranty becomes the only option? Additionally I have the impression from Lenovo's website that a post-warranty can be purchased at any time, but that doesn't make much sense since it would seem you would just buy it once something breaks?

I bought a 5 year warranty extension, which extended my 3 year another 2 years to 5 total. I bought this about a week before the 3 year expired. I believe it was about $189 at the time, bought from Lenovo directly. This was a few years ago, but my understanding has always been you can extend a warranty as long as the original one has not expired. Call again and speak with a different rep. Most of them do not know of what they speak!

Just curious if you got anywhere with the warranty.

Well the warranty was purchased and I have the receipt.

However, the website still says it ends at 5-25-2012. We called Lenovo about it about a week ago, but didn't have the receipt on hand so I guess they couldn't do anything. The guy told us to email him the order number once we got it, but never heard back on that. Looks like we'll have to call again.

Called again. After giving the order numbers they admitted it was a mistake, but told us it would take a few weeks. After the warranty expired I went ahead and posted about it on the Lenovo forums. That must have gotten somewhere since I now have an email that says the warranty was extended until 2014 and the website also reflects that.
