X301 Fan speed - 5000rpm normal?
Hello,
I recently purchased an X301 that appears as if it has never been used, even though it is three years old. I have noticed the fan runs at an RPM that is really too high, and too noisy. It's typically running around 5000rpm or slightly more even though the temperature doesn't require it.
I installed tpfancontrol and that has helped, a lot.
I just wanted to check. Is 5000rpm for the X301 pretty normal? This is the SU9400 model but I noticed the same thing on my previous SU9600 CPU model.
Are there any other methods of controlling the fan other than tpfancontrol? It seems to work well enough but I thought I would ask the experts here.
Thanks,
Thor

I don't remember the speeds that my fan ran at before I installed tpfan but it was just too noisy. Now I notice it does very quicky get up to 5000rpm seems to idle at around 2000rpm. At least it's a lot quieter than it was.

Updating the bios may help if you haven't already done so. After all a 3 year old x301 would have a 3 year old bios.

Hi, I am just curious - what is battery health after 3 years? How many % of full charged capacity does it have now? Thanks
Re: X301 Fan speed - 5000rpm normal?
It depends on a number of factors such as the level of charge before long term storage, the temperature of the storage area and how much the battery was used before storage. I have installed batteries that were stored new for more then 3 years and when fully charged they were as good as new.czatlantis wrote:Hi, I am just curious - what is battery health after 3 years? Re: X301 Fan speed - 5000rpm normal?
I have run a couple of tests. My battery is supporting 3.5 hours of use. Seems as if the battery is working well.
As for the fan noise, TPFanControl is doing what I need. If the surrounding environment is noisy, I run the fan on tpfancontrol manual 2 (~4500rpm). When it's in my home office on my desk I might set it to tpfancontrol manual 1 (~1900rpm).
The BIOS was actually 4 years old. I updated it to v3.15 but it didn't change the fan rpm. No worries, I am done upgrading the machine. It's as good as it's ever going to get right now.
8GB of RAM, 160GB Intel Series 320 SSD, lid sticker to protect the surface from nicks, etc. It's going on its first road trip next weekend.

Re: X301 Fan speed - 5000rpm normal?
Hi there, for those of you who are using tpfancontrol controlling their fan speed, I notice that sometimes the BUS sensor is in the high 40 and exceed 50 degree C in few occasions. Even with the fan running at its full speed, the BUS temperature seems to be not going down, and my pwr sensor temperature is kind of high as well, normally higher than my CPU temperature. Could you please let me know anyone experience the same issue? Many thanks in advance!
Re: X301 Fan speed - 5000rpm normal?
The X301 fan regulating system is really screwed up. It will run at 5000 rpm even if the CPU is at 40°C. If you apply new thermal paste you could let it run at 2000 rpm constantly.
I have also noticed that the the X301 gets warm where the WIFI card is located. This might explain the high BUS temperatures.
