WiFi help needed.

#1 Post by newyorkpaulie » Thu May 24, 2012 3:18 pm

I just changed over from DSL to cable and my internal wifi card does not do it anymore so I am using D-Link USB (DWLG122). Does anyone know of a better way? Maybe PCMCIA is the way to go? The router is Motorola SURFboard® SBG6580 Series Wi-Fi Cable Modem. I have an HP Tablet and this gives terrific speed (almost 30Mps), but the T30 is creeping along at just under 8Mps. The router is set up to use WPA.

According to the specs I just read, the USB ports on the T30 is 1.1, not 2.0. So you have a USB bottleneck.
I would use a PCMCIA WiFi card.

Sounds like good advice - thanks! I will do some info searching and try to see what PCMCIA card is suggested for the T30. If anyone reading this has any ideas for me I would appreciate them.

You probably still have the original 802.11b wifi card.
Replace that with a 802.11B/G card and install the proper drivers.
Apply the NO-1802 hack to the BIOS if the laptop complains.
That should be it.
The above has been documented in numerous posts on the forum.

I have a disk with the 1802 fix on it that someone gave me, but isn't that a dos program? I'm using a dual boot WinXP/linux system. Meanwhile I'll look through my parts box (got a few of these cards) for one that uses B/G. Thanks for the info.
[added later] - I don't have that stuff with me here so I looked on eBay and I only see the b/g cards for T40s. I tried adding T30 (my model) to the search but nothing comes up. Are you sure that b/g is supported by my machine? Sorry to question you, but rather than shell out $ I thought I should check.

What can I update my wireless to without 'hack'

1) only -11b pci cards were available back in 2002 when our T30's were built.

2) -11g/b cards became available with T4x's.

3) T30's bios whitelist does NOT include -11g cards.

4) T30 with 1802 bios update will support -11b,g,n cards.

5) RBS prefers Intel pci cards

6) jronald prefers Atheros pci cards

7) I have this external pc card (Linksys wpc54g) in my machine right now...
