Has anyone tried 2x8GB for 16GB in a T510?

Has anyone tried 2x8GB for 16GB in a T510?

I know the chipset is an Intel 620M with a max of 8GB according to the spec sheet, but some other laptop owners with early i7 chipsets appear to have done so successfully.

Thanks.

Hello, the Intel Core i7-620m processor is a dual core, hyper threaded processor (e.g., 4 threads) and supports up to 8gb of RAM. Here's the details from the horses mouth: http://ark.intel.com/products/43560/Int ... -2_66-GHz). I had a T410 and it was maxed at 8gb as well. There were some reports of folks using 16gb, however, it turned out to be a false positive as they were using a 32-bit operating system. When you try 16gb with a 64 bit operating system, the CPU can't address all the RAM. Sorry.

Ah, bummer. It's a work laptop & I need to run several VMs, one of which is memory hungry. 8Gb isn't enough and 16Gb barely so, so I'll just have to put in a request for a new one...

And thanks for the advice.

Sure. Yes, I had the same reason - running multiple VMs - that was the primary reason I went ahead and upgraded my T410 to a T420 as it looked like the T430 wasn't going to raise the maximum RAM supported and the processor in the T420 was fast enough for now. Good luck getting a new machine!

The PC Sales Guide/Configurator (available for free from http://www.pscfg/downloads.htm) has a Needs Assist function, whereby you can specify a series of Feeds & Speeds requirements, and it will find all the matching machines, both current and withdrawn in the past 2 years. If you need a machine that can get to 16 GB, you can specify that, separately from how ever much memory it starts with.

I tried to include a screen capture but that did not work, so any suggestion would be appreciated. Or, you can just get a copy of the tool and try it yourself.
