Troubleshooting Ibm Thinkpad 760 EL?

#1 Post by ad4y » Mon May 28, 2012 6:42 pm

Hello and thanks for reading and I appreciate your help a lot. Ok, here is the deal, I had a bad motherboard aka system board, so I get another one install it and now when I turn the laptop on the screen is all black but you can hear the hard drive and the computer going thru the process but I can't see anything on the screen. Ok so I try several things, like removing the memory and put it back in, nothing, then I check the laptop closing lid to make sure it works good and its working good. So I was told that it could be either the inverter board or the video board.. I rule out the inverter because with the old system board the screen was working great... and now it does not..

so do I need a new video board? the system board is a 05K3170 and the video board is model #39H6227

Any help and input would be great...

The ibm is a ibm thinkpad 760el but I am begining to believe since I got it from ebay that several parts from the 760 line were used..

It sounds like you didn't seat the display cable correctly.

Is the motherboard an exact replacement for the original?

Hello, Jax

ok, I re-check the display cable and try it again and still nothing...

as far as the motherboard aka system board I got a 05k3170 which I was told was the replacement for it, but I am now wondering that maybe the video card that I have is a svga but the motherboard that I got has a vga video on it and that is why its not working, else I might have to get yet another mother board... but when I check I see several ones like 11j7660 and 11j9155

I had the similar problem when I replaced a system board from my 760XL (800x600, Trident VGA 1MB) with with one from 760XD (1024x768. Trident VGA with MPEG decoder 2MB). I had either to replace the screens or replace VGA parts between system boards back.

You didn't write what was the problem of your old system board, but if the VGA part is ok, you can use it in the new board. For example I have my 760XD for playing old DOS games, so I replaced original IBM audio/modem card with lower end one with ESS chipset (which has better FM/MIDI synthesis).

I've made some photos long time ago: http://translate.google.com/translate?s ... 2F&act=url (Google Translated)

Was thinking of adding a 760 to my collection. Nice to see al the photos of the machine in all it's glory. A job well done it would appear.
