How many are paying & using cloud storage?

#1 Post by lemonstar » Mon May 21, 2012 2:02 pm

Is anyone here using cloud storage to backup their files? Who with? How much space? What cost? Just a general question - maybe some of you are thinking about it. I already pay for webhosting but only have 250G which isn't much for backing up pics, video, music as well as work related files & resources - pdf's, ebooks, audiobooks. 1TB would be a min, 2TB would be useful.

Disk storage is very cheap nowadays, and before i waste any money or risk any privacy issues with an external cloud storage hoster, i'd rather buy a few 1 TB disks for redundant backup storage. The cloud is to computing what the cheap giveaway of petroleum lamps was for petroleum sales.

On-site backup is good for most, but has its disadvantages. One can also encrypt his/her data before sending to any "cloud".

Speaking of cloud "backup", Ars did an overview and comparison recently.

I use some online cloud storage, but keep to the free quota and I only actually store things up in the cloud that I don't "care" about from a security perspective. Such as PDF's of books I've purchased, configuration scripts from my laptop, etc. Amazon and Ubuntu ONE are the services.

For everything else I just use DVD backups.

i just do NOT trust cloud storage..
call me a control freak..
i use two Drobo's..
one of the original 4 drive units and one new 5 drive unit..
and i'm ruminating on how to get one into the gun/fire safe..
i guess it can be done using ribbon cable for power and I/O..
either that or hide one in the cellar..

Nope. I've toyed with the idea of using Amazon S3 as a redundant backup to my local drive, but I'm just not a fan of handing over my personal files to random strangers.

It's cheaper, faster and more reliable (for me) to buy another 2 TB drive than store files on cloud.

This describes me also. I use Ubuntu One to synchronize program files for school, which means I always have a fairly recent copy on at least one of my laptops. I still don't fully trust the cloud for primary storage though. No financial documents, personal info, or anything important gets synchronized. Plus the sync causes problems sometimes when I'm actively writing code, so it gets turned off.

Ever since two web-based email accounts deleted tons of my email without giving me an advance warning, I have been avoiding cloud storage like the plague. I do have a free box.com account which I access like once every couple months, but I have nothing important there.

I use DropBox, but backup the contents to a physical hard disk.
