Win 8 pre-GA on a T60
Win 8 pre-GA on a T60
So far runs great....downloaded a few drivers off Microsoft Updates.
Actually impressed with it. Much different of course with 2 different screens, Metro and regular.
Runs pretty fast with only 1gb of ram..
more to follow and let's here from someone else..

Re: Win 8 on a T60
I've tried Developer's Preview on T43, T60p and X61T.
The tablet was a no-go, drivers sorely missing at the time. Played well with both T units, though.
Loaded it on A31p as well...let's not even go there. Wiped it after two hours because I couldn't get anything to work properly... I guess that the old boy is beginning to show his age...
Right now I have Consumer's Preview on one of my X61Ts and the difference is immense. Apart from the tablet buttons, everything works and the machine feels both fast and fun to use.
One of these days, when I'm bored out of my mind I'll test it again on T43p and T60p...stay tuned.

Re: Win 8 on a T60
Running Windows 8 on a T60 (64 bit frankenpad) with two gig of ram. Setup on a 80 gig SSD with separate partition for documents and other personal files. (that's how I always set up my computers) Using a dock, I can get nice digital video output to a HP 20" external monitor. To get the video output, I just installed net framework 3.5 and used Vista drivers from Lenovo download site. Only installed the drivers, not the whole catalyst control program. Works great that way. Despite the Start menu oddities, I can navigate quickly and easily. Some operations (like search) require extra steps, but that is a small inconvenience. The SSD makes the whole thing truly fast.
I will likely never use a touch screen, but getting around on Windows 8 is still pretty good. Windows 8 setup was faster than Windows 7 setup, and the whole process, including installing MS Office was quick and friendly. I did install Lenovo Hotkey features, which I like for looking at audio volume, etc. That worked fine, but Hotkey onscreen objects only appear when switched out of Metro. I also like the UltraNav features for better control of the touchpad sensitivities. I've also had similar success on a W500 and Windows 8. Again, Vista drivers were used for the dock's external video output. However, Display port output from the W500 also works when dock is not in use. Again, older Vista drivers used for that digital output from the W500.

Re: Win 8 on a T60
W8 is running quite sweetly on a T60 for me, except for a couple of things:
1. A 'My Documents' screen keeps popping up uninvited. If I leave the machine for half an hour I can have as many as 10 or 12 such screens open. (This seems to have been a problem with earlier versions of Windows. I have tried the RegEdit fix but it makes no difference.)
2. I did a fix to bypass the Metro screen and go straight to a conventional desktop. This worked fine for about 24 hours, but now works no longer. (I know it's only one click to escape from Metro, but it's the principle that matters. On a T60 I am never going to want to use Metro. I hope Microsoft will listen and allow users to choose how the system starts.)
Actually, I am a dedicated Linux user. There is nothing so far in W8 that will make me want to change.

Does your Frankenpad have the FireGL 5250? I use my more or less stock T60p in a dual Monitor setup. I could get both monitors to work with Developer Preview and Consumer Preview, but it won't work with Release Preview.mgo wrote:. . . . Re: Win 8 on a T60
I've run both Developers Preview and Consumer Preview on my T60 with no problems; dual booting with Win 7 x64. I have a dual monitor setup with a Samsung Syncmaster 22" as the second monitor. I got Win 8 to work with both monitors on DP & CP, but I had to install a Vista driver for the ATI FireGL 5250 to work. However, that little work around wouldn't cut it on Release Preview. There's no way to get Win 8 to work correctly with this video card. I finally broke down and ordered a T61p with the Nvidia FX 570 video card. Maybe that'll work.

Re: Win 8 on a T60
Hi - I've got the CP running on my T61p to a touchscreen Dell 22" 1080p without problems. You'll want to install TPFanControl on it as the GPU and the CPU share the same fan, but I've used the Dell both as the primary and the second monitor. (Win 8 only recognizes it as a touch device if it's the primary.)DaElderGeek wrote:I've run both Developers Preview and Consumer Preview on my T60 with no problems; dual booting with Win 7 x64. Something else cool I've been playing with is "Mouse without Borders" from Microsoft Labs. It lets you mouse over from a Windows 7 desktop to a Windows 8 laptop or other PC and wherever the mouse is, the keyboard follows. It also includes rudimentary drag-n-drop of files from PC to PC. It's sort of a software KVM without the "V."

It also adds the scroll wheel for horizontal scrolling in Metro apps like Weather and News, which I've never figured out how to simulate with the UltraNav.

Re: Win 8 on a T60
Lat week I installed Win 8 on my T60 and it works correctly. Exeptions ? Touch pad driver - I couldn't scroll pages and I had to use older driver to Vista and not to Win 7. With this older driver scrolling works correctly. I had problem with graphic driver. It didn't want to install. I installed it once again manually and now it works. I have ATI X1400 and in Win 8 the windows gamming factor is 3.8. Not really bad. In Vista I had 4.0. In aero the factor is now 4.0, the same like in Vista. Power manager works but I can't install think vantage. Information I received says that operating system is not recognized.
I am interested if MS considers to support Windows 8 for T60/T61 series.
