Installing the integrated webcam on a W500?

#1 Post by mingle » Fri Jul 27, 2012 2:26 am

Hi,

This is my first post on the site (which is a wealth of useful info!) despite being a ThinkPad user for longer than I can remember... :-)

I've just picked up a W500 to replace my trusty old R51, but it didn't come with a webcam installed, despite the seller claiming it had one :-(

So I'm planning on adding a webcam myself and replacing the front screen bezel with a webcam compatible one - sounds pretty simple, eh?

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could tell me the part of FRU numbers for the parts I'll need?

All I think I'll require is the webcam assemble and a new screen bezel with the cut-out for the webcam.

Also, any hints or suggestions on the best was to remove the screen bezel (I'm sure there will be a trick to it!) would be
greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Mike.

Welcome to the Forum.
Download the W500 manual here: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc ... 630_04.pdf
It's fully illustrated with all the P/N or FRU numbers as well.
To replace the webcam, you only need to remove the LCD bezel as documented.
Webcam = 42T3634/42T3633 (ca. $20.-)
Bezel with webcam opening = 42X4815 (ca. $30.-)

If it wasn't there, get a partial refund from seller to the tune of $50.-.

Thanks for the reply - the maintenance manual is particularly useful!

I'm working on a $50 'refund' from the seller - that'll pay for the missing parts.

Cheers,

Mike.
