T42 Drivers
T42 Drivers
I obtained an old T42 laptop for my grandson, had to do a clean install for him Windows XP SP3.
I am now missing some drivers and search for downloads but not very successful.
The missing drivers are for:
Ethernet Controller PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_167D&SUBSYS_05771014&REV11\4&111A1FD8&0&00E0
Network Controller PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_4224&SUSYS_1011808&REV_05\4&AD1B67F&0&10F0
I am totally new (and lost) to ThinkPads (also a techno "disabled" pensioner) so I hope someone here can help or guide me
Thanks in advance

Re: T42 Drivers
Bill thank you. I have downloaded the driver Ethernet (Intel PRO/1000 LAN adapter software) for Windows XP. I followed the instructions
Start Windows XP, XP Tablet PC Edition 2005.
Extract this package onto your hard drive. The default location is C:\DRIVERS\Win\ETHERNET.
Click Start then click Control Panel.
Click Performance and Maintenance then double-click the System icon.
Click the Hardware tab.
Click Device Manager.
Expand the Network adapters category.
There is no Network Adapters category. But under Other Devices with a yellow question mark I found
Ethernet Controller
Multimedia Audio Controller
Network Controller
PCI Modem
Video Controller
2 Uknown Devices
ALL WITH YELLOW Question marks
There is no Intel PRO/1000 PL Network Connection or Intel PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection to select to install the driver just downloaded

Re: T42 Drivers
The Intel PRO/1000 is an ethernet controller. Once you get that installed and establish a network connection, you can download and install MS dotnetfx and Lenovo System Update which will download and install all the other drivers automatically. Or just download them yourself and manually install them.

That is my problem. I can not get it installed. As I've mentioned I am a granddad and technology disabled so need some help here pleaseNeil wrote:The Intel PRO/1000 is an ethernet controller. In Device Manager I find under Other Devices (Yellow Question Mark)
Ethernet Controller (yellow Question mark)
If I select this and try to install the driver by selecting
C:\drivers\win\ETHERNET\PRP1000\win32 next (where the downloaded driver is)
Wizzard could not found the software for your computer...
Re: T42 Drivers
Sorry, I must have skimmed through your post too fast.
Looks like you are on the right track. I don't see any obvious errors in what you are doing, but it's hard to tell from this distance.
I would suggest a careful reading of the installation instructions. You will probably see where you strayed, or a missed step.

There's a 7-character model number on the bottom of the laptop - the same sticker that holds the serial # and production date - starting with 237x-xxx
What is the full code? 237?-???

Re: T42 Drivers
I think the problem may be that you are trying to get the install Wizard to do the job, and it doesn't know where to look for the drivers.
Try the manual install outlined in the readme I linked to in a post above.

I have followed the instructions in the section CLEAN INSTALL: (Ethernet Controller in Other devices) as per your link.Neil wrote:I think the problem may be that you are trying to get the install Wizard to do the job, and it doesn't know where to look for the drivers.

I have downloaded driver 7ira09ww.exe for Intel PRO\1000 LAN Adapter Windows 2000 and XP. Ran the .exe file and it extracted to C:\DRIVERS\Win\ETHERNET which created 3 sub directories APPS, PRO100 and PRO1000 plus 3 files
Opened Device Manager\Other Devices right clicked Ethernet Controller select Update Driver, Install from list or specific location, Search for best driver - include this location: C:\DRIVERS\Win\ETHERNET\PRO1000\WIN32 next
searching ? Ethernet Controller then..... The wizard could not find the software on your computer
Have also tried \PRO100\WIN32
Re: T42 Drivers
Hmm...that should work. But, instead of choosing "search for best driver" in the specified location, choose "don't search. I will choose the driver to install", and point the installer to the directory that contains the .inf file.
If that doesn't work....maybe boot up a live Linux CD and see if it detects the ethernet hardware. Almost all of them will have you connected and online by the time the desktop has loaded. If that works, it proves your hardware is OK, and it is indeed a Windows driver issue. If it still isn't working, you may have a bum motherboard. Maybe a failing southbridge chip. But, I shouldn't jump to conclusions just yet. I think we still have a driver installation issue, so let's run through the above trouble shooting steps first.
Keep up informed on how you are getting along.

Have you tried doing the same thing with "Network controller".raycomp wrote: There is no Network Adapters category. But under Other Devices with a yellow question mark I found

I'm not all that technically savvy (compared to a bunch of folks here), but I think that sometimes there's a "head" network controller on some laptops, controlling both ethernet and wireless. I do know that sometimes when you start installing the missing driver for one yellow "!", a few others gets done in the process.
Above may very well be total gibberish and is mostly based on a hunch.
Anyhow, as Neil says, when the driver install tool detects a driver (.inf file), it automatically writes it in the "open file" box (or similar, can't check, am on a Win7 machine), so if you browse through the folders one by one, you should see it there when at the right folder.

Re: T42 Drivers
Per Lenovo's website:
ThinkPad T42 (2373-L77)
Based 2373-9XG: P M 745, 1GB RAM, 80GB 5400rpm HDD, 14.1 SXGA+(1400x1050) TFT LCD, 64MB ATI Radeon 9600, 24x24x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD, IBM 802.11a/b/g wireless, Bluetooth/Modem, 1Gb Ether, UltraNav, Sec Chip, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro
This machine has an IBM (Atheros-chipped) wireless card. These cards - unlike the Intel ones - identify themselves as "ethernet controllers".
My guess is that you need this driver to clear the "ethernet controller" question mark:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloa ... D=DS003567
Once you've downloaded it and extracted it, you'll have to go to C>Drivers>Win>Wlanath and run the setup file from there.
If that clears the "ethernet controller" question mark, Intel driver *should* get rid of the "network controller" one.
Good luck and keep us posted.

These details are exactly what we needed to see. It seems that is a T43 planar. Go into BIOS, what machine type is reported there?raycomp wrote:details of devices with yellow Question marks in Other Devices

Re: T42 Drivers
Thank you all. Downloaded the drivers for T43 instead of T42 as indicated on the machine worked perfectly
Re: T42 Drivers
Glad you got it sorted out. It sure seemed like the driver you were trying to install was the wrong one, but it was right for a T42.
