T60p running hot, freezing, and crashing
T60p running hot, freezing, and crashing
My machine has really started to act up the past two days. I had three blue screen crashes yesterday and one today. Todays said it was a BAD_POOL_CALLER. The temperature has been running up between 70C and 92C depending on what I have running and I have noticed that when the temp gets around 90C that's when it starts to freeze up. I bought a new battery a week ago, but the freezing and crashing only started yesterday so I don't know if they are related. I ran a hardware scan using the ThinkVantage tool box and every thing passed. The fan is running quietly and seems to be moving a good deal of air. I would like to ask what I can do to pin point the problem(s). Thanks in advance.
Re: T60p running hot, freezing, and crashing
might be good to pull the fan/heatsink assembly and refresh the thermal compound with some arctic silver (or similar), and really blow out all the dust bunnies. pretty easy job without too much tear-down. if you don't already have it, here's the link to the hardware maintenance manual: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc ... 844_04.pdf
cheers!

I will give it a try thanks!
Re: T60p running hot, freezing, and crashing
While you are in there, check that the fan still works at all. They do wear out and just quit.

Re: T60p running hot, freezing, and crashing
Opened it up and cleaned out the colony of dust bunnies and reapplied some thermal compound. It ran for four hours then froze up again during a back up . I was unable to see what the temperature was because my screen saver was up at the time it froze. For the first two hours while I was working the tems were between 63C and 80C. the fan is working, but I don't know if it is moving as much air as it should.
Are there other reasons that it could be freezing so often and how can I trouble shoot?

Turn off the computer, remove the battery, power it back on and run it on AC. See if this problem persists. If it's gone, then the battery is the culprit.

I will test it but, would this happen with a brand new battery?pianowizard wrote:Turn off the computer, remove the battery, power it back on and run it on AC. See if this problem persists. If it's gone, then the battery is the culprit.

Re: T60p running hot, freezing, and crashing
Just run the machine with no battery for a few hours and see what happens...

Re: T60p running hot, freezing, and crashing
Has been running since about 12:30 on A/C with no freezing temps even getting as high as 90C at times.
Re: T60p running hot, freezing, and crashing
Install ThinkPad Fan Control and see what that does for you.
While no freezing is a good sign, 90C is a lot unless you were gaming or stress-testing the machine.
Good luck.

Re: T60p running hot, freezing, and crashing
My Zone Alarm found the Heuristic Trojan.Win32.Generic and Packed.Win32.Krap.hc viruses which were removed. It has been running afterwards with out freezing. I also contacted the retailer that I purchased the battery from and he suggested that I update my BIOS. I did so and the machine has been running in the 45C to 78C range since.
