:enovo takling X1 Carbon orders NOW!

#1 Post by Greg Gebhardt » Tue Aug 14, 2012 5:56 am

Not sure if this is the right section but Lenovo is taking orders for the X1 Carbon now for shipping on 8-22.

I just ordered my maxed out X1 a few minutes ago.

Yeah, but the morons that run the show at lenovo decided to only make 8GB of RAM available to the i5 CPU and not the i7. The i7 can only be ordered with 4GB of RAM.
I called to ask about this and they told me that they don't have any info on when or if it will be available.
Anyone?

it is unkind to call lenovo marketing "morons"..
they might well BE dumb or out of touch but morons..? i think not..

now, USUALLY such omissions are for very good reasons and if NOT they usually get corrected fairly quickly..

welcome to the forum.. :)

Well, I found on lenovo's forum that it is related to heat.
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-Th ... d-p/829183

I just did a google search to see the differences between the 2 CPU models.
http://compare-processors.com/core-i7-3 ... 427u/4969/

Other than just speed, they seem identical.

Actually, I have been a forum member for years, but I haven't visited in a while, and it seems like my account was cancelled.

Read this on Engadget today...
>>Again, there's a three-year warranty here, which is a nice bit of reassurance<<
Lenovo web site looks like a 1 year warranty??
Anyone know the true warranty??
Thx.

Different configurations carry different warranties. The "true warranty" is whatever the system comes with. For the CTO models that's whatever you configure at the time of purchase.

I can vouch that few if any accounts are cancelled as mine is still good and I have been a "bad boy" before! This place rocks when it comes down to patience!

This may be a dumb question, but I noticed there is no camera for the X1. Does that mean I won't be able to Skype type stuff, or that I just won't be able to take pictures???
Thx.

ya see here, 1600x900 is not what i would choose if given a choice.. much better than 1600x800 but still i would want something like 1600x1200 or at least 1600 (or so) x 1050 (at least)..
SOOOO, given no choice except go or no go my choice is no go until a reasonably sized display is available..
and hopefully some sort of IPS (flexview) display at that..

but other than that it looks like a nice thinkpad and i'd sure like to play with one..

things being like they are that is unlikely until maybe, i hope, next year..

@Zaz

Are you going to do a review on the X1C?

Yes, but I've got the HP Envy m6 in the queue first.

Nice to see someone has the new X1

Which model? How is it handling thermal loads? Is it getting hot on the bottom?

For what I am going to use my X1 for, I think the i7 with 4gb ram will be more than capable. I am not a gamer but need a real laptop in the field that can do MS Office, AutoCad and PhotoShop. I have done this on much less powerful machines. I just can't see heat being to much of a problem as I will not be stressing the CPU. That and the SSD, the X1 should not have a heat problem.

It's a review unit so the no model/machine type on the bottom. I think it's the base model. I haven't pushed it yet, so it's hard to say about the thermals, but like I said, I've got the HP to finish first before I can give it my full attention.

Lenovo moved my shipping date again to 8-29-2012! This is the 3rd time which tells me that they are missing some parts as it could not be in production for over a week. Anyway we will hope it ships soon!
