SDD replacement on a X230t...Help

#1 Post by Elwarpo » Tue Aug 14, 2012 11:54 pm

I searched but could not find this.

I have a new X230T and bought a Samsung 830 256gb SDD for it. when I try to use Norton ghost I get error messages. I wanted to copy my old HD (320gb) onto the 830. The other thing is when I plug the SDD into the USB adapter the computer does not recognize it. I can find it with disk manager but nut under my computer. What am I doing wrong? Please explain in not to techy words.

I boot up using the HD, start norton ghost and select copy my harddrive. I select the windows 7 OS C:\ and Lenovo recovery and then e:

Thanks

I would say welcome to the forum as it is noted that this is your first post. It seems though you have been around for nearly 3 years.

Sorry you are having trouble.

Firstly I don't think you would see the Samsung in My Computer unless it was formatted.

The preferred method of cloning is to have the target drive installed in your ThinkPad and the source drive in the external USB adapter.

I use Acronis which I boot from a USB drive or a CD.

Welcome to this forum..
Like Brad* suggested - I would highly recommend Acronis ....
- you can download a DEMO Copy - works jsut as well as paid one !

> generally I keep the ORGINAL FACTORY DRIVE ( as shipped from factory) and use that for any 'recovery' puroposes
> I normally dont even LOG INTO the laptop when I first receive it; first thing I do (for personal use) is take out the factory hard drive and use ANOTHER LAPTOP to CLONE THAT DRIVE and or if am using SSD = I fresh install windows7x64.

> as far as USB not seeing the new drive = I would say test it different PC - might be hardware issues and or drivers
often some older USB drives are not 'visible' in these NEWER USB(usb3.0) slots ...... just frustrating but happens ,,,

Hope this helps
Cheers

You're trying to clone a 320 GB into a 256 GB which some cloning software may not like. I recommend a live CD version of Parted Magic. I have it installed on a USB drive and find this package very useful for diagnostic and repairs. Within the Parted Magic package I've used Clonezilla. In your particular case instead of "cloning drive to drive", I would clone "partition to partition".

Thanks, I have browsed the forum for years, I have a T43P and a T61P and have learned a lot here.

I formatted the drive on my T61P so it is now showing up I will try the Acronis. and let you know. the latest where I formatted the SDD using Ghost with the HDD in the computer, led to the windows error saying it is an unauthorized copy and the blue screen of death.

Thanks for all the help.

I did the same with my X220, purchasing it with a 320GB drive and then upgrading to a Samsung 830 256GB.

I created recovery disks and then used them to recreate the system software as this seemed the best way to ensure that the SSD was properly aligned.
