T22 and UltraBay
T22 and UltraBay
Hi there,
Following a previous question regarding installing XP onto my T22 for watching DVD films, I did so today. Installation went just fine, but now the OS does not see the DVD drive.
Or more specifically, if I put a cd into the drive, it appears in My Computer, but will not open. I have tried updating the BIOS but every time, receive a DOS message to the effect that the drive is not recognized and I have to press Cnt-Alt-Del to restart.
Since I have various drivers on back-up cd's, how do I install them if the computer will not see/read the cd?
Thanks
Rex

Re: T22 and UltraBay
Remove/reinsert the CD drive.
Windows has built-in CD/DVD drivers, so no need to install any others.
If the drive refuses to be recognized, you need to buy/borrow another one.
Those drives are now 8-10 years old...
Or buy an external USB CD/DVD drive, which you can use on your next (or any other) computer

Re: T22 and UltraBay
Can't get it to see the drive. With a DVD or cd in the drive, it shows in My computer but will not open.
Have tried to up-grade the BIOS and still get a message 'The diskette in the default drive is not recognized. etc. etc. etc.' I don't have a diskette in the default drive!
Everything was working fine with W2K but watching DVD's was becoming painful as the drive took a lot of work to see the disk. When it did, no problems. So thought I would up-grade to XP, as advised, but to date, this is no better.
What next?

Since your drive has a history of disc detection problems, I would suggest you try cleaning the optical lense of the drive. Use some compressed air to blow off any dust or dirt that may have accumulated on the lense surface and CD tray. If you have a clean fine bristle paint brush or a camera lense brush I would use that as well in combination with the compressed air on the lense. Don't use a lense cleaning CD as it may damage the drive. At least it did when I tried one.
If reseating the drive into the bay and cleaning the drive didn't resolve your problem then the next step is to try a different drive as RBS suggested earlier. Due to its age the drive may no longer be spinning up to the correct speed, tracking correctly on the disc or the optics are weak.

As for the drive giving up the ghost (Norton?,) that is something to think about.

Re: T22 and UltraBay
Have replaced the DVD drive with another that I have and that seems to be working.
Regarding the one that caused me to post the first time, is there a utility for testing a DVD drive, as there are for testing the HDD?

Re: T22 and UltraBay
I have so many of these Ultrabay 2000 DVD drives it's not funny. I think only 7 are DVD / CD-RW though. If you ever need another send me a PM. They are also getting very inexpensive on ebay.

Re: T22 and UltraBay
You could buy 'bare' CDRW/DVD drives from other laptop brands, and then transfer the black plastic surrounds from the old DVD drives onto these 'foreign' drives to make them UB2000 compatible.
You may need to modify an occasional tray to fit in the UB. (Dremel to the rescue...)

I thought those drives looked similar to other brands!

I am trying to put an IDE hard drive in the plastic surrounds of a gutted CD drive, do you know what type of connector (specs) I need to make this work for T30

Re: T22 and UltraBay
You need a 2nd HDD adapter for Ultrabay 2000, such as this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-THINKPAD-UL ... 256f4b16e3

Re: T22 and UltraBay
thanks guys, I already have a SATA ultra bay for my T30, just out of curiosity I wanted to see if I could convert a non working cd burner into an ultrabay by fitting an IDE drive in it and making the necessary connections. I already took every thing out of the burner and cut the plastic to fit the IDE but I need to know what type of mating connector to use between the T30 and hard drive. this is a " I do not know what to do with my time project" but maybe I can learn something in the process

Re: T22 and UltraBay
It might be more than just wires. In any event, I really don't want to take apart one of my original IBMs. I can see why you'd want to do it, as the original IBM HDD adapters are getting scarce and pricey, but there are a couple of 3rd party trays out there that should work, and they are inexpensive, maybe not worth your time and expense for the connector??ashbury wrote:thanks guys, I already have a SATA ultra bay for my T30, just out of curiosity I wanted to see if I could convert a non working cd burner into an ultrabay by fitting an IDE drive in it and making the necessary connections. Come to think of it, they probably just have a special connector, but again, I'm not sure exactly what they have.
