I have the LG Optimus 2X.

It's extremely cheap used, and if you buy a 3500MAh battery for it, as well as root and flash it, you've got a very nice phone, which wont need replacement in quite some time. I've had mine like that for a year now, and the battery still lasts 5 days if I only use it for writing text messages.

@JohnD. -- If you only have nine months left, your Sprint cancellation fee should be only $90 --
http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/90960

ETF on 2-year Agreements signed before 9/9/11
Months Remaining on Service Agreement
Amount Due
23 -- $200.00
22 -- $200.00
21 -- $200.00
20 -- $200.00
19 -- $190.00
18 -- $180.00
17 -- $170.00
16 -- $160.00
15 -- $150.00
14 -- $140.00
13 -- $130.00
12 -- $120.00
11 -- $110.00
10 -- $100.00
9 -- $90.00
8 -- $80.00
7 -- $70.00
6 -- $60.00
5 -- $50.00
4 -- $50.00
3 -- $50.00
2 -- $50.00
1 -- $0.00

Quote from Sprint Representative: "Prior to 9/9/11 the highest fee was 200 dollars after 9/9/11 there is one fee for advanced devices 350 dollars and one for basic devices 200 dollars. To make the more expensive devices affordable we give a higher rebate for upgrades and new customers this means the ETF will be higher. Contact account services at 1-888-211-4727"

JohnD., based on your months left in contract, you signed the contract before 9/9/11 -- make sure the Sprint Representative you cancel with acknowledges the different terms -- check your contract date and then hold Sprint to the $90 fee.

***This chart shows Sprint's early termination fees for contracts signed ***AFTER 9/9/11*** (which should not apply to you)
http://support.sprint.com/support/artic ... 823-171256
-- even this new scale shows your fee for cancelling with nine months remaining is $180 -- not $350.

Hope this info can be helpful to you -- NOTE: I don't have Sprint -- I just googled this info -- even though the quotes are from Sprint Representatives, I have no way to confirm the validity of their statements -- just wishing you good luck in trying to cancel your contract. :?

I'm an android.
I patiently await the day when Lenovo phones come to the US.
Until then, I'm buying Google's next flagship. And if they finally do the multiple vanilla phone thing, I'll probably go with Samsung.

Call me crazy, I am a Blackberry user. I love my Torch 9810 which has both nice sized touch screen and actual, not virtual, keyboard. Also, it integrates well with my tablet, which is of course a Blackberry Playbook. I get full internet connectivity on my tablet via the data plan on my 9810, so I am not relying on wireless availability. I can use my phone as a remote control for my tablet.

Nothing crazy there...I'm also a big fan of having a physical keyboard/touchscreen combo (I'm now using an HP Veer, which has the same basic design idea as your phone, only smaller). I'll be up for a contract renewal upgrade late this fall, and am going to hold out until RIM releases their BBX stuff, since they're just about the only company left that still prioritizes hardware keyboards. (That said, the new Nokia WP8 devices look promising, especially with the inductive charging...one of my favorite features from my HP/Palm phones...and Windows Phone is my favorite remaining current smartphone OS, now that WebOS development is pretty much dead. If RIM doesn't come through with something neat, it'll be one of the Nokias, unless somebody else has a QWERTY Windows Phone (unlikely))

Blackberry Bold 9900
I've been a Blackberry user since 9700.
I'm not a longtime user, but I really like it, especially because of battery life.

LG Spectrum with an extra long-life battery; it makes it easier to hold the phone. Graphics are amazing. Phone quality is so-so but with ear buds it's okay. It does everything my computer does so I can leave the computer at home now and travel light.

Have you used phones with a large slide-out mechanical keyboard? Typing on a keyboard like that (e.g. the one that my HTC Touch Pro2 has) is far easier and faster than typing on a touchscreen. However, if you were specifically referring to all those Blackberrys with tiny screens and tiny keyboards, then I agree with you.

Wow, I would love to have such a phone! As soon as a phone comes out that can run Microsoft Office the exact same way as a regular computer (e.g. allowing you to edit and run PowerPoint animations), I will buy it and stop traveling with a laptop. I am optimistic that this will happen within a decade.

A phone screen is too small for that. A tablet might make it.

For current phone screens, I agree. However, smartphones have been increasing in size and in a few years some of their screens could be over 7". I have always thought that the 8" 1600x768 screen of the Sony P Series netbooks would be ideal for this hypothetical smartphone. It's just small enough to not look stupid when held against the ear, and just big (and high-res) enough to get some Office work done on the road. You might object that such a pixel density (222 DPI) would be too high, but keep in mind that this would be used as a phone and so it would be held pretty close to the user's eyes. In fact, my Touch Pro2's 3.6" 480x800 actually has an even higher pixel density of 259 DPI. If I anticipate to work a lot while traveling, I would still grab one of my laptops, but if I think I will just make minor edits to my PowerPoint presentations, then this hypothetical phone would be fine. Imagine, a single device that (sort of) replaces both tablets and laptops! To me that's the next step in the evolutionary of computing: personal desktop computer --> laptop --> tablet --> whatever you call this (tablet phone?)

I don't think the current 7" tablets are small enough to fit in a pocket, although this may change if their screen bezels become much smaller in the future.

Oh heck no, I'm not going to carry a & or 8" phone. I just got my iPhone 5 and it feels over-sized (length only) compared to the iPhone 4 it replaced. I'm with Steve Jobs, 3.5" is the sweetspot for me.

You are right but he recommend a good, easy and faster stylish smartphone and i think touch is more smart than QWERTY phone.

I wouldn't want to carry an 8" phone all the time either. In this scenario, I envision owning two phones: a regular phone about 3.5" to 4.0" that I carry most of the time, plus a super-sized phone that I use when I need to get some computing done.

I'm with Steve Jobs as well. I like to be able to hold the phone and enter information using the same hand, and my 3.6" HTC phone is about the biggest size that allows this. But on some trips I wish I didn't need to carry a laptop in addition to my phone, and this hypothetical 8" hybrid device would solve this problem.

Two phones means two accounts or constantly swapping SIM cards. It also means two syncs, and possibly even two different OS versions. Don't forget two different resolutions and likely two different sets of compatible apps.

For me it one phone, and a super-lightweight laptop that I can, on occasion, leave home in favor of an even lighter tablet.

iPhone 5 andMacBook Air 11" is my usual setup, though for long trips I might take the Retina MacBook Pro, or occasionally leave the laptop home and bring the iPad or go phone only if I don't plan to mess with documents.

But the problem is this: I am crazy about minimizing my travel weight. What you consider to be "super-lightweight" (which I am sure refers to your 2.38-lb MBA) is still too much for me. I now have a 1.41-lb Sony X Series that's even lighter than the 3rd-gen iPad and I don't mind traveling with it, but if I can leave it home, that would be even better.

I don't mind having two phones with different specs and apps. I use my smartphone pretty much just for the internet, my calendar, phone book and Office, so there aren't that many things to sync.

I'm crazy about weight loss too, which is why I've owned at least one laptop that weighed less than 4 lbs since the mid 1990s, and why my current laptop weighs 2.3 lbs. In fact, my favorite improvement in the iPhone 5 over the 4 is the weight reduction of the new model.

Honestly, the iPad was something of a waste of money for me, though I do play with it it rarely goes out of the house now. Its either MacBook Air for most work, of phone-only if I want to travel light.

I go to Korea twice per year, and some of the phones over there are ridiculously large. Its funny watching all of these business men and women in their well-tailored suits holding these 8" monstrosities up to their heads.

Less is more!

I thought you were exaggerating and so I did a Google search and confirmed what you said! Like I said above, 8" is actually not too crazy for a phone as long as the screen has a very wide (i.e. tall) shape e.g. 1600x768, and as long as there is minimal space surrounding the screen so that the phone is only slightly larger than the screen. Such phones would have about the same dimensions as cell phones of the late 1980s and can still easily fit in a pants pocket. But the 8" phones that people use in Korea have 16:10 or even 4:3 aspects ratios!

Haven't you guys seen people using a 7/8" tablet to make phone calls...? And no, I don't mean with a headset...

Cheers.

Not in the US market, but they are all over the place in South Korea.

Guys, you need to start looking at other posters' locations! asiafish and I are in the U.S., where we never see people holding 8" tablets against their ears. I find this interesting because historically, everything that Americans use/own is bigger, like cars, houses, computers, headphones, etc., but now we know of at least one exception.
Dell Latitude 7370 (QHD+, 2.84lb); HP Pavilion x2 12-b096ms (1920x1280, 3.14lb); Microsoft Surface 3 (1920x1280, 2.00lb);

Link? No, I have trips to Korea where I saw all sorts of people using the things. I personally wouldn't consider anything over 4", and actually prefer the screen size (3.5") of my iPhone 4 over my new 4" iPhone 5 (5 is better in everything else though, including lighter weight), so I had no interest in makes or models of these things.

I would suggest googling domestic Korean market for Samsung, LG and the Korean cell phone carriers. You can probably get one gray market and use it on Verizon or Sprint as South Korea is mostly CDMA.

I had an HTC Thunderbolt that was really great but the battery life was atrocious. I recently upgraded to the Samsung Galaxy S III and it's like having my laptop in the palm of my hand.

Went from ThinkPad R51 to a W520 and love it. Not sure about the W530 yet.

Nokia E7 <-> Nokia E71. Gotta admit, I love the Nokia E7 because its faster and very well built and the screen because its outdoor readable. Even in broad daylight, its as clear as the mono-chrome LCD screens of yonder days. But E71 was designed and built to be the ultimate business qwerty, bar none my favorite for emails on the go, so I end up switching between the two devices. My biggest gripe with most of the current set of smartphones is that they are too consumer focused (even the E7)... I could care less about music or watching movies or auto posting photos to facebook, than I could about making/receiving calls and sending emails.

Symbian is hugely underrated these days.
3-4 days of battery life with moderate use (15-20 min of talk time/day) is pretty good.
Heh, I have E72 as well but I have to disagree with your opinion about Symbian. The OS and especially the default net browser are buggy and trying to update it with Nokia Suite results in a bricked phone. ("Hard" reflashing is needed and I don't have the software to do it.) The control panel is also pretty garbled. In short, good hardware, bad software.

Agreed. Software development killed old Nokia. New Nokia focuses on a core competency of excellent hardware design, and outsources the software development to MS. Probably still not enough to save the company.

I am running an E6 which was the successor to the E7x series, and has a gorilla glass touchscreen. Great little phone, fully updated from factory. Opera Mobile runs well, so I can't comment on the native browser.
