E220s RAM

#1 Post by Du@lB00t$ » Mon Apr 30, 2012 9:57 am

I KNOW that the specs say 4Gb max. My X120e said the same, and I put in 8Gb (4Gb x2) and all is fine. Has anyone tried to shove a single 8Gb RAM chip into the E220s? Some of the RAM limitations cited in the specs appear to reflect the maximum RAM size available at the time of manufacture, not a technical limitation of the machine. I just got my daughter the E220s on sale, and would like to increase the RAM to 8Gb.

Any knowledge here? Thanks.

So, am I going the be the very first one to try this? Looks like it. Stay tuned. When I find a good price on an 8Gb module, I'll spring for it and give it a try.

Dear Du@lB00t$,

I don't have an answer for you but I wanted to say thank you. I am getting a x120e today in the mail and you just confirmed that the machine can take 8 gig of RAM. Yahoo!

Take care,
John

It's better than that. As part of my project to upgrade my wife's and daughter's E200s machines to 8Gb, I just got a 16Gb kit of Corsair RAM. I decided to take both modules for a spin in my X120e and the full 16Gb is recognized and running happily in the X120e. I ran MemTest86+ for several hours and there were no errors, so that's reassuring. Both W7 64 and Ubuntu 64 report it accurately. But it's way more than I need. I'll eventually pull one and see how the E220s responds to 8Gb.

Dear Du@lB00t$,

That is great that you got 16 Gigs in the x120e! Can I ask you what is the model number/part number for the two Corsair sticks?

Thanks again!

I tried Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600MHz memory module and its working well with my E220s. The original memory has PC3-10700 certification and Im not sure if common PC3-10600 memories will work correctly, because laptop bios ignores SPD timing values and the only value is 9-9-9-23 (vs. common 9-9-9-24). Because I bought Vengeance, that it can handle.

Doesn't seem all that particular. I tried the same two 8GB modules, and they were fine in the E220s. I then pulled one and replaced it with a 4GB, for a total of 12GB in my x120e and 8Gb in the E220s. Mixing size and brand has not been a problem for the x120e machine.

Thanks to all that posted in this thread. I installed Corsair ValueSelect CMSO8GX3M1A1333C9 in my ThinkPad E220s last night and everything has been running great for 24 hours. I wanted to post in here and have another confirmed use of 8GB.
