My new X220 Tablet!

#1 Post by IT_Sean » Sun May 20, 2012 4:26 pm

 Hi all... New member here.
I recently replaced my Apple PowerBook G4 with a ThinkPad X220T. It's a fantastic machine (i'm running Ubuntu 12.04 on it).

Hi IT_Sean,

Welcome to the Forum!!!

That is great that you got a new machine! I have a G4 machine collecting dust upstairs also. Looking at your pictures makes me want to upgrade my x200t to a x220t unit like yours.

Can I ask you how much you paid for it?

Thank you,
John

Mine was a build to order, and, if i recall, i paid about $1200 after options, ordering direct from Lenovo.

I really could not be happier with it. I was worried about the size of the screen (as my old PBG4 was a 17"), but, i honestly, have not missed the larger screen at all.
I've always had a thing for ThinkPads, having had several second hand ones over the years, so, when the time came to replace my PBG4 (which also ran Linux), a ThinkPad was the obvious choice (I wouldn't have any other non-Apple laptop, and why pay extra for Apple branding, when you won't be running OS X?).

Hi IT_Sean,

Thanks for getting back to me.

Did you have any issues running Ubuntu 12.04 on the x220t? If so, what were they? Were they hard to troubleshoot?

Thank you,
John

pe. It works perfectly from the start, with only one minor issue. That being that the touch input does not rotate with the screen rotation (so, when the screen is at 180, touching the top left, moves the mouse to the bottom right, etc...). This is fixed very easily with a simple script.

I'm at work, but, when i get home i'll dig up the screen rotate script that i use, and give you al ink to it. The script solves the issue of the touch input rotation not being aligned with the screen image rotation.

Other than the screen rotation pen & touch input issue, the X200t runs Ubuntu like a champ. Everything works right out of the box, including wifi, bluetooth, the camera, sleep, the SD card slot.

Let me know if you've got any more questions on the X220t and Linux. I'll be glad to help you out.

Hello,

I currently have a little Asus Eee 10" Netbook which I use quite often, usually some 5 hours a day. Yesterday I saw the X220 and X220 Tablet. It looks pretty sweet, but I am not sure whether I want to spend 1200€ on it …

I got a couple questions for you, if you could take the time to answer them.
  • Does the Wacom Tablet in the screen work right out of the Box with Ubuntu 12.04? Could you test whether Xournal works fine?
  • Do you have the big battery that protrudes from the back of the notebook? Is it handy, or rather cumbersome?
  • Do you have the docking station? If yes, does it work with Ubuntu?
Thank you very much!

The touchscreen / tablet function of the X220t works perfectly out of hte box with Ubunto 12.04. What is Xournal?

Yes, i do have the battery that sticks out the back . It makes a handy handle both for carrying the laptop (tucked under the arm, battery at the bottom), and for using it in Tablet mode.

I do not have the docking station.

Thanks for answering!

Xournal is a program that lets you take notes with your Wacom Pen. I currently use it a lot with my external Wacom Tablet for taking notes and solving math problems. That way, I do not have to use any paper.

I got another two questions:
  • Does the rotate button work like it is supposed to be?
  • I know that the regular X220 has a matt finish (anti-glare), but I do not remember the X220 Tablet, I think it has a little shiny cover, but not as extreme as the glass iMac. I got mad with the iMac's glass screen because of the reflections, how is it with the Tablet, does it reflect way more than a regular anti-glare display? On your pictures, it looks like it is not that bad.

It sounds like a really dandy computer, since I work completely paperless :-)

The rotate button does nothing out of the box, but can be bound to a screen rotation shell script.

My X220t has a matte display, as i did not get the "outdoor" display.

Check out my script here:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=104228

How do you get it to execute when the button is pressed? I tried within the settings to create a new keyboard shortcut for it, but unfortunately it does nothing. I would love to know if anyone's figured it out!

Great pictures by the way. I'll have to post mine soon. :)

Add this to /etc/rc.local
setkeycodes 6e 109 6d 104 69 28 6b 01 6c 120

Then just set up a new keyboard shortcut to your rotate script. The rightmost bezel button will work for this. The middle one (looks like a circling arrow) for some reason, does not.

I got mine today and it works great with Kubuntu 12.04. With your script, I can easily change the display orientation, that is very neat. Thanks for your testing and pictures!

No problem. I can't take credit for the script, though.

I used the Tablet yesterday in the university and my eyes hurt in the evening and pretty bad in the morning. I remember that type of eye strain from my iMac which had the glass panel.

So I got to test it for the next week and see whether I can cope with the slightly glossy screen.

Other than the screen, I really love it since the details seem really thought-through. And I am already missing the trackpoint on other notebooks.

Both worked out of the box for me w/ Ubuntu 12.

What, exactly, isn't working for you?

Wow, really nice X220!
I'm positively surprices of how they made the keyboard fit perfectly in it, compared to the X61's, which is quite smaller! - Comparison below
