New MacBook Pro Retina Display is IPS
Here's a link.

I'm very well might be switching.
Lenovo better put ANY IPS in the next model line... in 2 years...

Re: New MacBook Pro Retina Display is IPS
There are several comparison videos on youtubekenyee wrote:What's wrong w/ the W5xx 95% gamut LED FHD display?
between the two I'd still pick the IPS. I'm still using my 15" IPS compared to my loaded W520...
But Retina display is a killer feature, on top of being an IPS panel
I was disappointed in latest Lenovo offerings (W530 in particular). They seem to be just bumping the specs without introducing any new tech into their model line
Re: New MacBook Pro Retina Display is IPS
You mean this video?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1Dwrc6Msak
Seems ok...more contrast than IPS so hard to tell from a youtube video. What does it look like in person? Less viewing angle than IPS and more contrast is what I'd guess...

Re: New MacBook Pro Retina Display is IPS
That would do.
I'm not starting a pissing contest.
I strongly favor IPS panels.
Not being Apple fanboy, I would still shake hand with whoever decided to make that decision.
It will push other manufacturers to match their offerings or lose on the market.

As long as they provide a full 3-year warranty, that's bearable. Most people won't bother with repairs for machines older than 3 years (folks on these forums being an obvious exception)

For example, the reason I repair old machines from IBM/Lenovo is, that the
the real and good Thinkpad stuff is no longer offered by Lenovo.
I am really keen to get my hands on this new Retina display in the MBP,
despite glued battery, soldered RAM, etc. If I cant get a good classic
NMB Thinkpad keyboard any more, I might as well purchase a nice Retina display
together with an awful newish chicklet keyboard.

What exact kind of IPS technology it is ? Cheap e-IPS (6 bit only) or S-IPS/H-IPS with full 8 bit per channel ?

Re: New MacBook Pro Retina Display is IPS
There are still options for a fake. You can have real 10 bits or 8 bits + 2 FRC. Anyway real 10 bits would be also power hungry. Again, even 6 bit e-IPS is still much better than any TN with so called 100000% color gamut

Apple offers no accidental coverage. If you were to drop it or spill something on it, you'd have an expensive paperweight. That may be important for some users.dr_st wrote:As long as they provide a full 3-year warranty, that's bearable. I know it got a nice screen. But i dont think it can make it up for the lack of upgradable and user-replaceable hardware, good warranty, Trackpoint, good keyboard (the thinkpad chiclet is still among the bests - at least thats what i heard), docking station, the superior quality of the thinkpads etc.
I think it matters more than a good screen. And it is always possible to connect at external screen.
But thats just me
Best regards

Thanks for the offers, and I will come back to you guys, if I should need some.
I do actually have a limited stock of those classic NMB keyboards (German and US/EN) for the "old" models in my sig.
What I was hinting at in my preceding post was, that one cannot buy those brilliant classic keyboards with
current Thinkpad models any more... and therefore I could also buy an MBP with a similar horrible chicklet kbd,

Re: New MacBook Pro Retina Display is IPS
Apple got me on this one. To the tune of $2611, including tax.
I hate losing the serviceability of ThinkPads, and I especially hate losing the TrackPoint, but... I've not been impressed by Lenovo's quality lately, the keyboard layouts suck nowadays (and the key mechs weren't really anything to write home about for a while now IMO - and the MBPR at least has tolerable key feel), and... well, THAT DISPLAY. And the fact that to get that display, I get a modern CPU and modern mid-range GPU, instead of being stuck with 2007's best CPU and a GPU that was gimped to be mid-range in 2007 at best, and isn't competitive against modern INTEGRATED any more.
Oh, and my decision was cemented by the fact that my QXGA panel started developing a dying line the Thursday before the keynote, and they're getting harder to find.

Someone reported that Windows 7 is defaulting to 150% on this screen, so I'll not run default.
I'll run 100%.
And, I'll disable HiDPI support on OS X, too.
(Hey, I do own a T221. Gotta have a special kind of crazy (or eyesight enhancement, which is true in my case) to use that thing at 100%.)

Re: New MacBook Pro Retina Display is IPS
Just curious, why would you rather have two small, very high-DPI monitors instead of many larger, average-DPI monitors? I need an enormous amount of real estate as well, but I have chosen to achieve this through seven 1920x1200 monitors plus one 2560x1600 monitor, all on the same desk, giving me a total of 20.2 megapixels. Let me guess: You have a very tiny desk? You want to save electricity? You are a masochist?bhtooefr wrote:(Hey, I do own a T221. Re: New MacBook Pro Retina Display is IPS
Not much available space, and I have the eyesight to do it.
In fact, I end up having to reconfigure what desk space I have based on the task I'm doing, and I don't have enough desk space to even run the T221 right now, which is why I like having a lot on the laptop itself.
Pretty sure the T221 doesn't save much electricity compared to four 24" 1920x1200 monitors, T221s average around 80-100 watts in normal use and 150 max, between the ridiculous backlight power needed and the powerful image processing hardware implemented on FPGAs.
The Dell U2412M pulls 38 watts typical, 72 maximum, so it's between 152 and 288 for four U2412Ms. And a lot more desk space used.

Re: New MacBook Pro Retina Display is IPS
I can't stand what apple is doing to their laptops. They're bridging the gap between laptops and tablets/phones/mobile devices by not allowing them to be repaired/upgraded by the end user. And unfortunately apple has a tendency to "lead the way", albeit the wrong way...
The expansion issue is probably Apple's most controversial decision. That is to say, the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display can't be upgraded. Period. The RAM is soldered down, the CPU is soldered down. The GPU is on-board. The SSD features a proprietary shape and port (though at least it isn't soldered down, too). Even the battery, which lost easy swappability with the advent of the unibody MacBook construction, is glued directly to the chassis. -Notebookreview
What is most regrettable about this new design is the battery. Since Apple glues the battery straight onto the body of the machine, getting the battery replaced means that the entire top portion of the machine will need to be replaced. That brings extra cost, which gets passed directly onto the consumer - in this case, it'll be a $199 fee... -Notebookreview
And finally, ThinkRob over at NBR (and also on here, I believe) sums up my thoughts best:..purchasing the extra two years of AppleCare is almost a requirement for this machine - and that adds on an additional $349 to the asking price. It's expensive, but speaking with one Apple employee who mentioned how much higher parts and labor costs are going to be with this machine, well, you get the idea. -Notebookreview
That's my 0.02 anyways...For some slick consumer laptop looks, support for (some versions) of OS X, and a nice glossy screen, MacBook Pro.
For build quality, hardware compatibility, upgradeability, vendor support, matte screen, good internal design, durability, keyboard quality, and price, get a ThinkPad.

Re: New MacBook Pro Retina Display is IPS
I've had my Retina MacBook Pro for about three weeks now.
The display is AMAZING! In OSX or Windows 7 it looks fabulous. I use 150% font scaling running the display at native 2880X1800 in Windows 7 and the "Best Retina" setting (1440X900 on UI, 2880X1800 on most content) in OS X. Absolutely stunning display in both operating systems.
Build quality is fantastic (the usual for Apple) and in the four years since the first Unibody MacBooks were released they've really got the keyboard feel to a pretty high level. A T4x ThinkPad keyboard is still better, but the new Apple's are far better than most non-ThinkPads and perhaps as good as some of the new ThinkPads for keyboard feel.
No, it isn't upgradeable, but where else can you get a display like that, connected to a fast quad-core i7 and mid-grade graphics in a 4.5 lb package. I never carried my 2010 model 15" MacBook Pro with me (I have an 11" MacBook Air), but with the new Retina I actually carry it when I think I'll want to play games, watch movies or work with my digital photos.

Re: New MacBook Pro Retina Display is IPS
Well, the new 13.3" MacBook Pro is also IPS and is still 16:10, with 2560x1600 resolution. It weighs only 3.57 lbs, and at $1,699 it is more affordable than the 15.4" Retina. This 13-incher may be the most tempting Apple laptop yet, though I'm pretty sure I would never buy one.
Dell Latitude 7370 (QHD+, 2.84lb); HP Pavilion x2 12-b096ms (1920x1280, 3.14lb); Microsoft Surface 3 (1920x1280, 2.00lb);
Dell OptiPlex 5040 SFF (Core i5-6600); Acer ET322QK, T272HUL; Crossover 404K; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP
