Determining Thinkpad system ID within Linux

#1 Post by rhombus » Fri Oct 26, 2012 10:04 am

On Windows machines it is normally possible to determine the system ID (e.g. 2373-72U) in software.

Is there a way to do this in Linux? I thought tp_smapi was supposed to support this, but if it does, I have been unable to find it.

this seems to work on debian:

dmesg | grep thinkpad_acpi
the way up and the way down are the same (heraclitus)

It's possible for the thinkpad_acpi messages to get pushed out of the kernel message ring buffer. A more reliable approach might be to read the values in /sys/class/dmi/id specifically the board_name field. If you're root, you can also find the information by running /usr/sbin/dmidecode.

Welcome to the forum etherfish and thanks for the heads up on dmidecode, lots of useful information in there.
