Did you get Windows 8 on the launch day (Oct 26th)?

#1 Post by pianowizard » Fri Oct 26, 2012 7:13 pm

So I purchased Windows 8 today through the $14.99 offer. This was not only the first time I had bought Windows on the launch day, but in fact the first time I had ever purchased Windows, period! Before, I had always just used whatever OS came with my computers or upgraded using my institutions' site licenses.

I installed it on my 5-year-old Panasonic Toughbook CF-Y7 and am loving it so far. All the Vista drivers from Panasonic's web site worked, except for the Hotkey driver although the Fn functions actually still work. I am so glad that after this upgrade, all of my computers except the Inspiron 7500 (which is early PIII) now run Vista or newer. I have been increasingly disgusted with XP.

No...not me. I'm not in the market for any new hardware, but I did look at the $39.99 upgrade that can be used to upgrade XP, Vista or Seven to Eight, and I see that the offer is good until the end of the year. So, I guess I'm still considering the upgrade. Seems to be the lowest price I've ever seen for a Windows upgrade.

But after trying the preview of 8 for a few months, I've found that I'm just not fond of the metro start screen. Not even sure I want to continue using Windows at all, but the Windows licenses that I currently have (XP, Vista and 7), should serve whatever Windows needs I might have the several years to come. So...I didn't buy anything today.

I'm not one for early adopters of anything so no. Maybe after Win 8 SP1 I'll have a good look at it. Win 7 does everything that I need for the moment.

Well, beyond promotions for PCs purchased with the prior version, and near release of a new one. Nothing beat free (although that time has passed).

Not me.

I've played with W8 in its beta guises since they became available, and am very underwhelmed. Might decide to wait for the next OS altogether...between W7 and Linux, I'm pretty sure I'll be OK...

Yes. I get it yesterday, I bought the 50 € Upgrade (with DVD) from Amazon Germany for my L520 and I love Windows 8 since the first minute. :D But I had some problems with the upgrade, it won´t install because of the program "Lenovo Auto Scoll" (see: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-8/C ... d-p/897169).

After the upgrade, I was shocked to see that Windows 8 took up so much space. Then I remembered to go to "Disk Cleanup" --> "Clean up system files" --> "Previous Windows installations" & "Temporary Windows installation files"

I am leaving the 2.07GB Windows ESD installation files on the hard drive for now.

Early adopters? hehe. I still use Windows 3.1 and TOS, well I wouldn't say daily, but a few times every week. Dabble in BASIC whenever I really, really have to, and can't get out of it.

In all fairness, that's industrial equipment. Everything else is XP or Seven based. I might give 8 a go on my X200 and my HTPC, but I'm sticking with Seven on everything else. Modern UI (aka Metro) bugs the sh*t out of me.

I'm still using Win8 RP on my daughters T43p and my x61 (dual boot with Ubuntu 12.10).
I have been testing it for some time and when MS asked in one word how I would describe Win8 I said...Bi-Polar. I think if they really want Win8 to succeed they need to allow the users to pick which interface they want to stay in. I'm good with either but getting thrown back and forth is weird.
I just put XP Pro and Mint 13 on my x61s and it flies compared to the x61 above, and the x61 has 4gb ram while the x61s only has 2gb with a slower proc.

Win7 lured me back from Mac and now I hear Linux calling me!

Cheers

Not too long after I said this I found out my university offers its students some free software....W8 being one of them. lol I got very curious and really- for free?! I figured well I have an extra hard drive so maybe I could just throw W8 on there for kicks :D

Well I am typing from W8 Professional 64-bit on my T400. I got the OS and Microsoft Office 2010 for free but I can only have it on this T400 I am typing on. I have everything I want downloaded and installed except the 'switchable graphics' drivers. They are being elusive :?

I though that too, they should have separate OSes for PC/Notebooks and another for tablets/phones. Call it Windows Mobile or something similar. I had a chance to review a HP notebook with Windows Eight. I liked the start screen, but they've over engineered some other common tasks. I have a Windows Phone and like the OS quite a bit, better than iOS. The part I don't like is the apps are more expensive, but the phone cost less and I don't have to pay $80 a month for it. Pick your poison on that one I guess.

Did you install all XP updates? I bet you didn't because with SP3, all updates and a virus scanner installed, XP becomes *slower* than 7 SP1 or 8, perhaps even slower than Vista SP2. My Toughbook CF-Y7 used to run XP Pro SP3 and upgrading to Windows 8 has made it noticeably faster. Interestingly, after the upgrade, its fan also seems to be activated less often.

At first it felt inconvenient to not have the Classic Start menu but I sort of overcame this problem by putting the Control Panel icon on the Desktop and by eliminating all rarely used programs from the Metro menu. Despite what lots of people are saying about 8, I think it's a winner.

I just noticed you are not using Windows 8, but Windows 8 *Release Preview*. Not a fair comparison!

I got a hold of my friend's copy after he installed it on his. I don't have a key, but I wanted to prod around in it before the activation notices some up. I put it on my X60T, and so far... I can say the X60T is the only computer I think it would work for me. I'm not completely fond of the new interface and the way it's laid out.

I do like it a little bit, for example right clicking on the Start pop-up gives you all the cool-boy toys right off the bat. Pinning stuff in Metro's also a bit handy. Metro looks nice too in my opinion.

I might buy Windows 8 through that $14.99 deal, as I recently did get a netbook with 7 on it.

Check to see if your university is providing its students with it before buying. Out of curiosity for prices I checked the website for the bookstore on campus and noticed that software was provided for current students and faculty. It turns out that some Microsoft software was available to download for free with certain provisions such as current enrollment in the university and not selling the keys you receive.

I had plans to. Wish they sold a full install digital download though. I'm just too lazy to go out and buy an OEM disc, then find an ISO to put the RTM on my X220 tablet. Might just clone my 7 install and upgrade one but I'm too lazy for that as well

I own a Lenovo laptop about 6 months old and to complete the install process it is asking me to uninstall key components from the laptop. Such as the USB 3.0 software, monitor software, and Never Slowdown. Im sorry windows but I am not removing key components from my computer. Thank you but I will be asking for my money back and will just use Windows 7.
