SSD to Recommend?

#1 Post by Medessec » Fri Dec 13, 2013 5:40 am

I'm thinking of buying a new SSD for my W700ds for faster booting... and I'm wondering what I should probably go with, since my SSD experiences are rather limited(due to my rather tight budget...).

The only SSDs I've used legitimately: an Intel 160, the X25M. Works beautifully, however a couple of months ago my computer abruptly BSOD'd, and half the data was corrupted on the following reboot with CHKDSK trying to save what it could during boot. I ended up having to reinstall Windows after problems arose with Autodesk Maya and .NET Framework. Not sure if the SSD was responsible... but would not like for that to happen again. I've also had an OCZ Vertex II 60GB, I really wasn't expecting much from that... but I use it daily on my X60T SXGA+, and although it doesn't feel snappy, it's definitely beat having an HDD in there. Plus... that poor thing gets dropped and tossed everywhere all the time.

For boot times and reliability... what do you guys recommend? I'm kinda hoping for 240GB, but I'm not certain I'll be able to afford that.
Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...

For me reliable ssds are Intel or Samsung.
Samsung 830 or 840evo would be my choices.

Get a Samsung 840 Pro, (NOT the EVO, it's crap).
My preference would be: Plextor PX-256M5P (the fastest, ca. $250), the above Samsung 840 Pro (ca. $250), or Crucial M500 (ca. $165)

Lenovo: X240, X250, T440p, T480, M900 Tiny.

What I've personally tested and worked well in my ThinkPads/ToughBooks:

Intel 320 series

Crucial C300 and M4 (aka Micron C400)

Samsung 830 and 840Pro

OCZ Vertex (pre-SandForce versions with Indilinx controller)

Personally, I'd stay away from any TLC-based SSD, at least for the time being.

With that said, I strongly prefer reliability - even a perceived one - to speed when it comes to SSDs.

I've had a Patriot Pyro going strong for two years now!
Intel 830 (I think) going fine on my desktop for a year now.
Recently got a ADATA S510 and its been OK for the past 6 months of owning it.

I haven't stressed test them but they work well enough for me for daily tasks.
