Currently, hard drive upgrades for thinkpads fall into two categories..
T & A series (T20 through T23 series and A20 through A31 series) will accept up to a 12.5mm thick travelstar hard drive..
The largest travelstar drive is a 60gig, 5400RPM drive and is compatible with all the above thinkpads.
The 60gig is the only current drive that IS 12.5mm thick.

ALL recent and current thinkpad models will accept the 9mm thick travelstar drive.
570/600 series, 770 series and all T, A and X series, and the transnote and 240 series

As of 21-Aug-2002, the following are available:
60gig = $395
40gig = $295 (GNX series, 5400RPM)
40gig = $195 (GN series, 4200RPM)
20gig = $165 (GNX series, 5400RPM)
20gig = $150 (GN series, 4200RPM)
There are other drives (such as the 9mm 10gig and 30gig) available. Please email for a quote.

The rest of this page is a bit obsolete..
i leave it here for those who have some older thinkpads and might want some of this information..
Below is archival info.

While i specialise in ThinkPads, these IBM drives also work in Hewlett Packard Omnibook, Compaq, DELL, Micron, Toshiba Tecra and most other notebooks. I also have those really thin Toshiba 8mm drives from time to time.
I can also supply the appropriate HDD shell for most any notebook. The shells are usually $77 for those that are complex to $15 for a bracket.

Hard Drive Notes:
Most ThinkPad hard drives are removeable. Follow the links below for those few ThinkPads that require instruction.
17mm hard drives are useable only in 770, 76x(thick body), 75x,
380 & 385, 355 and 360 models.
12.5mm drives will fit ANY ThinkPad, but are better used where a "slim" drive is required.
i.e. 701, 760C,
560, 365E series, 365X, 600 series, et al.
The new 9.5mm thick IBM hard drives are available. These are suitable for any thinkpad,
Toshiba Libretto or so forth.

Older ThinkPad models DO support the newer Travelstar HDD's, but need help..
Read the comments by other users elsewhere on this site.

OS/2 users will need to update OS/2 for hard drives over 4.2gigs

AND, one more note to IBM drive users (and others i suppose)..
IBM drives incorporate S.M.A.R.T. technology that will monitor your hard drive and (supposedly) warn of impending doom.. (something like Windows95's nice little warning "You just blew away ALL your data!, "OK"!")..
in any event, here's the link:

NOTE: If your HDD is geting full, this little utility will become quite annoying. It'll also try to sell you on a new hard drive (which i totally agree with, but buy it from me! <g>)
IBM's Drive Fitness Test.. click HERE
this is an excellent utility.. you can turn S.M.A.R.T. monitoring on and off and run a good test of the drive..

NEW, Bare, large capacity HDD's -
(cash price)

IBM Travelstar 48GH Series
 on hand - $699 (less to existing customers)

This drive is faster than the 32gig below)
Read about the new "Pixiedust" technique.. click here

In short, this new drive uses some terrific new technology. Its data throughput is faster. The down side is that it
appears to also use a tiny bit more power. The good news is that IBM Storage has this nice little utility that
can be used to tweak the power settings on a travelstar drive.

IBM Travelstar 32GH Series
 on hand - $399 (thinkpad option drives)
Capacity - 32Gig, the Rotational Speed is 5411 RPM
Average seek time - 12.0 ms, height - 12.5mm.
This drive is fast!
This drive uses Load/unload technology which is a "back to the future"
sort of thing.. the heads park on a ramp and never (hopefully) touch the surface if the
disk platters. My Control Data Hawk and Phoenix HDD's used this technology in the 1970's.
This is, I suppose, a good thing. Without going into TOO much depth, in the "olden days" (see above)
hard drive heads never touched the disk surfaces. When they DID, we called it a head crash and
a disaster! Then Winchester Technology was introduced. The heads would land on the disk surface
when the drive was stopped. Now, it seems that IBM has re-discovered the old way.

The EZ-Gig Transfer 'Kit' is available separately with a 10 copy license.
Buy it or rent it.

A Hard Disk copy utility is available from Power Quest.. it is called Drive Copy
There is also a new Partition copy utility from Power Quest which will copy your complete hard drive image to any other media and restore it. This will allow a master drive image to be maintained and copied to any hard drive.
