IdeaCentre Q100 unboxed, quiet & unimpressive

Lenovo IdeaCentre Q100/Q110 nettop

The folks at NettopReview got a hold of one of Lenovo’s new IdeaCentre Q100 nettops and snapped some photo’s of it’s unboxing with some initial impressions.

Lenovo’s IdeaCentre Q100/Q110 is the company’s first true nettop, sporting a stylish, small form factor and the defacto Intel Atom platform. Announced mid-August, the Q100 finally went on sale at the end of September. The Q110 is a higher end version equipped with NVIDIA’s Ion platform and an HDMI output to make it a more multimedia capable machine.

Interestingly, the Q100 doesn’t use Intel GMA graphics, but SiS Mirage. NettopReview also notes that the USB ports on the rear are spaces a bit close together, making attaching multiple devices a bit tricky. Hit the jump for the unboxing photos and more of their impressions.

Lenovo’s first ultracompact nettop, the IdeaCentre Q100 & Q110, announced over a month ago on Twitter and just became available for purchase a couple days ago.

Starting today there is now a $30 coupon on the Q110, which if you remember is the higher end model with NVIDIA Ion graphics and the accompanying HDMI port. New Lenovo IdeaCentre Q100/Q110 nettop now on sale

About a month ago Lenovo let loose news via Twitter that they would be releasing a new ultrathin nettop, the IdeaCentre Q100 and Q110. The pictures looked good, the specs decent, and the price reasonable. Now you can pick one up for yourself.

There is one configuration each of the Q100 and Q110 available. You may remember that the Q100 is a more basic nettop, while the Q110 features NVIDIA’s Ion chipset for a much improved multimedia experience. Luckily both versions use the Atom 230 dual core processor, a step above the single core found in most netbooks.

The Q100 available has the defacto 160GB hard drive, 1GB RAM, and Windows XP Home for $299. When you step up to the Q110, you get a 250GB hard drive, Vista Home Premium, 2GB RAM, and HDMI output via the NVIDIA Ion chipset for $399. $100 for all those features may not seem like much, but keep in mind it is a 33% price increase over the Q100.

Perhaps most interesting is that neither of these configurations comes with a keyboard and mouse. I guess you’re just supposed to stick your fingers in the USB port and an eyeball in the video output?

Even more details on new Lenovo IdeaCentre D400 & Q100/Q110

Slashgear got a hold of the official Lenovo press release, which is dated the 19th, and we’ve pulled a few more details out of that:

IdeaCentre Q100/Q110 nettop

  • 6 x 6.3 x 0.7 inches
  • Supports mounting on the back of an LCD monitor
  • Q100 has Intel graphics, Q110 has NVIDIA Ion
  • Q100 has VGA output, Q110 “supports 1080p high definition video” – perhaps an HDMI output?
  • Q100 starts at $249, Q110 at $349

One final note on the Q100/Q110: the design is not new. Our friends over at Lilliputing have pointed out that Lenovo’s new nettop looks almost identical to the Medion Akoya Mini E2076 D (at least the Lenovo has a better name). Even the Medion is based on an existing design, the Pegatron nettop.

I hope there’s more to this story, but the bottom line is that you need to innovate in this market and this economy to succeed. Lenovo’s saving grace here is that their pricing is extremely competitive and they have the chance to reach a new audience with the Q100/Q110, as Medion has very little presence in the U.S.

Breaking: Lenovo to announce IdeaCentre Q100/Q110 nettops & D400 home server

In a surprising move, Lenovo has put out word on their Twitter account of two new products to announce later this week: the IdeaCentre Q100 & Q110 nettops and the IdeaCentre D400 home server.

Lenovo IdeaCentre Q100/Q110 nettop

In their 140 character limited messages, LenovoPress identifies the Q100/Q110 nettops as some of the thinnest in the world. Looking at the pictures, we’d have to agree. These things truly look like a netbook with a slick table stand. Since these have been identified as nettops, we can expect the pokey, but cheap and power sipping Intel Atom platform. While it is possible these models could be based on Intel’s forthcoming Atom refresh, it is more likely they will feature the existing and ubiquitous N270 1.6GHz single core version, or perhaps the less common Atom Z520 which runs at a bit lower clock speed, but sports dual cores.

Lenovo IdeaCentre D400 home server

The D400 is a bit more of a conundrum. We don’t really have any perspective on size, but it’s a safe bet to assume this beast will be smaller than your ottoman. Given the use of the low cost, but plenty fast Pentium Dual Core processors in the IdeaCentre Q700 Home Theater PC (HTPC), they would be a logical choice for this entry-level home server. It looks like it could have room for 3.5-inch hard drives, which would be a must to offer sufficient storage. Hopefully this IdeaCentre won’t be limited to 4GB RAM like the Q700 HTPC, but the biggest hurdle Lenovo needs to overcome is making file serving an easy affair for the average home user. Oh, and effectively market to them about WHY they need this black cube.

I know it’s a bit early to pass judgment, but the D400 just does not strike me well. The face is interesting and the LED’s & subtle stripe a nice touch, but it looks like an 80’s reject. Time will tell I suppose.
