ideapad s10-3

Intel recently released their first dual-core Atom chip specifically for netbooks and Lenovo’s already putting it to use in their IdeaPad S10-3 netbook.

The new dual-core Atom N550 chip is clocked at 1.5GHz, sports dual 512KB L2 caches, and has a max power consumption of 8.5W. This isn’t the first dual-core Atom chip, as there have been dual-core variants used in nettops where power consumption isn’t as much a concern, but it is the first chip specifically for netbooks.

This chip was spotted in a new IdeaPad S10-3 configuration at a German reseller. The model 06475CM adds 1GB DDR3 RAM and a 250GB hard drive to the new dual core chip, along with the rest of the usual netbook specs, for a price of €493  (or ~$626 USD).

New IdeaPad models tend to take a little while to make their way across the continents to North America, but we should see these new models before long. It remains to be seen if this will be sold as an upgraded model, or if dual core will supplant the single core versions. I’m expecting the dual core chips to be offered in higher end configurations with a fatter price tag.

Maybe Intel has found a way to introduce a little more margin in the netbook market?

A new version of Lenovo’s IdeaPad S10-3 is starting to hit retailers, with the only difference being the Intel Atom N455 processor that adds DDR3 memory support.

The Atom N455 is a refresh to the 1.66GHz Atom N450. Everything is the same between the N455 and N450, except for DDR3 support on the former and DDR2 on the latter. There should be no discernible performance increase, as the Atom processor is not bottlenecked by memory performance.

Right now there is also not much of a price difference between DDR2 and DDR3 SODIMM modules, although DDR2 does appear to be available slightly cheaper.

At least it is pretty cheap at $299 from Buy.com, with the same specs as the $359 model from Lenovo.com (except the CPU of course).

About a month ago, Lenovo announced a slimmed down version of their IdeaPad S10-3 notebook, dubbed the S10-3s. A Japanese-spec model was just reviewed and a couple concerning tidbits revealed.

Most of the bits are just as you’d expect, with a thinner system than the S10-3s and a new port layout that includes fold-down flaps to cover the ports. Unfortunately the blogger’s review model didn’t have the higher resolution screen.

A smaller chassis with the same electronics always brings with it the risk of heat dissipation problems, and it appears the S10-3s is afflicted with that problem. The blogger notes that while the heat is not as bad as the S10-2, it is worse than the S10-3.

Also of concern is another compromise made in the name of slimness: an apparent lack of any access panels to upgrade internal components. Comparing the blogger’s photos and the S10-3, it definitely looks like a removable panel was omitted. Even a RAM slot is not apparently accessible, making this a major downer for anyone who doesn’t want to shell out for a higher end model.

Hopefully the upgrading woes are not all they appear to be here, but only time will tell until these models hit U.S. shores.

This is one deal to mark under the super-hot category: Lenovo’s new IdeaPad S10-3t multitouch tablet netbook (I know, a mouthful) is on sale from the Microsoft store for only $424.

For not much more than the price of a run-of-the-mill netbook, you can get the S10-3t’s rotating screen with multitouch LCD. You also get the upsized 250GB hard drive, Bluetooth, bgn WiFi and larger 8-cell battery. The biggest let-downs on this machine are the defacto 1GB RAM and Win7 Starter.

Unfortunately there is a bit of a buzz kill: Win7 Starter does not include support for multi-touch. Near as I can tell, you should still be able to click and drag on the screen, but fancy multitouch features like pinch to zoom are a no-go. More RAM and Win7 Home Premium seem to be logical upgrades on this little tablet.

This deal is a full $50 cheaper than the next lowest price and should be good until May 5th.

How to get the deal

  1. Click here to start at Microsoft Direct Store
  2. Click Add to cart, click checkout now
  3. Input your payment & billing information
  4. Last step before confirming your purchase, apply coupon code: CLR-MSAFL-15%-PC in the “Promo Code” field to cut 15% off

Lenovo dropped a little Spring surprise on us today, with the announcement of the slimmer IdeaPad S10-3s netbook.

Back at CES 2010 in January, Lenovo announced the refreshed IdeaPad S10-3 netbook. It brought a slimmer chassis and larger, redesigned keyboard to the company’s successful netbook lineup. Not content to rest on their laurels, the IdeaPad S10-3s is slimmer than the standard S10-3, with a slightly revised chassis and a few additional spec changes.

Lenovo’s IdeaPad S10-3t netbook with convertible multitouch screen is now available with an 8-cell battery and is being sold at NewEgg for only $499 with $5 shipping.

The S10-3 is Lenovo’s latest netbook, announced at CES in January. They also announced the S10-3t version, which transforms the netbook’s 10.1-inch WSVGA screen into a multitouch panel that you can fold flat to use as a slate.

The S10-3 and S10-3t do use Intel’s new Pine Trail Atom processors, with the full specs being standard for netbook fare. You’ll get the 1.66GHz Atom N450 processor, Windows 7 Starter edition, 1GB DDR2 RAM, Intel GMA 3150 graphics, 250GB 5400rpm HDD, WiFi and a webcam for $499 plus $5 shipping.

While you may get two color choices through Lenovo.com, Cosmic Wonder and Cosmic Night, the specs are fixed and unimpressive. Compared to the NewEgg model, you get a smaller 160GB HDD and 4-cell battery for $50 more. You also have to wait for Lenovo to build and ship the “customizable” models, currently cited as within 16 days, whereas NewEgg has inventory on hand and generally ships in 1 day.

I’m guessing the “Cosmic Night” color is actually black, whereas the “Cosmic Wonder” is this art-deco color pattern. The NewEgg model is as shown above, in regular glossy black (aka Cosmic Night?). The NewEgg listing has more pictures of this 8-cell equipped IdeaPad, including a shot of the bottom.

The new Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3 is the company’s third generation 10-inch netbook, bringing a fresh new design and a multitouch tablet model to the fold.

The first thing you’ll notice is how different the S10-3 looks from the S10-2, which shared a lot of its aesthetics with the original S10. It comes off as more angular, with sharper edges and flat, rectangular sides that directly contrast with the S10-2. They even made the S10-3 a bit thinner, losing about a tenth of an inch from the last generation.

Once again leaked by the FCC, Lenovo’s forthcoming netbook has been outed as the S10-3, which will feature both Intel’s PineTrail platform and an S10-3t model with a rotating multi-touch screen. Happy Holidays indeed!

With so many players involved in the creation of a laptop, it’s no surprise the ball gets dropped occasionally (or a lot). This newest netbook is again going to be a 10.1-inch model, the new Atom N450 PineTrail processor, Windows 7, 3G and GPS. The keyboard is even rumored to be up-sized to a hefty 100%.

It sounds like the S10-3 should be a nice upgrade from the S10-2. We’ve got an S10-2 on hand and as soon as we can get an S10-3 in the labs, we’ll get right down to comparing them.
