Walt Mossberg is the tech guru of The Wall Street Journal and he recently took a look at a few of the latest CULV laptops, with some kind words for Lenovo’s IdeaPad U350. Overall Walt found them thin, light, and capable for the average user with sufficient battery life. I have to agree, but I think the big area lacking in even the CULVs is the horsepower to watch high resolution Flash video. Intel’s Atom and CULV processors simply don’t have the gigahertz behind them to play the CPU-heavy Flash video that is ubiquitous in internet video. Hulu, Netflix, and even YouTube are soaring as entertainment services and the only netbooks or CULVs that will get a shot at being sufficient are the ones with NVIDIA’s Ion chipset, when Adobe comes out with NVIDIA GPU acceleration support for Flash. As I found in my review of the U350, Walt felt the standard 4-cell battery was too weak and that the newly released 8-cell battery made it far more competitive. Still, the keyboard and thinness were standout among its HP and Toshiba competitors. We’ve had one of these in our labs the past few weeks (a review is coming, I promise) and it is a nice machine. The chassis is plastic to keep cost down, but it looks as sophisticated as an all-aluminum model. It gets decent battery life, has a nice looking screen, and is surprisingly thin & light. It now comes with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit preloaded, and YES it has Lenovo’s unique Enhanced Experience preload. This model even has an 8-cell battery, something that wasn’t previously offered on the U350 models, so expect even longer battery life. This U350 model (29632YU) normally runs $799, but is taken down with a $150 instant discount and 15% stackable coupon to $551 with free shipping. Keep in mind the deal expires today, specs and deal details below! - Pentium Dual-core SU4100 1.3GHz; 3GB DDR3; GMA 4500MHD

Tags: ideapad u350 Posted in Laptop & Tablet PCs | 1 Comment » Monday, September 21st, 2009 Lenovo's CULV laptop, the IdeaPad U350 Who needs a netbook with a small screen, cramped keyboard, and lackluster performance when you can get a 13.3-inch CULV for $449? Lenovo’s IdeaPad U350 is a 3.5 lb, 0.9-inch thin Consumer Ultra Low Voltage (CULV) notebook with a 13.3-inch 16:9 LCD. Unfortunately it lacks an ExpressCard/34 slot for expansion, but that’s the price you pay for a chassis that seems thinner than 0.9-inches. Lenovo is taking $100 instantly off the regular $699 price, but is also offering a very limited $150 stackable coupon. This coupon is only good for 200 uses and probably won’t last more than a couple days, so jump on this if you’re in the market. Find other Lenovo deals at LogicBuyTags: culv, ideapad u350 Posted in Laptop & Tablet PCs | 3 Comments » Thursday, July 2nd, 2009 MSI X-Slim X340 compared to Lenovo ThinkPad X301 & Apple iPhone 3G We’ve talked a fair bit about CULV (Consumer Ultra Low Voltage) systems here, the new thin & light systems utilizing a fresh Intel SU-series processor that is faster than a netbook, with better battery life, 11-13 inch designs, and in the price sweetspot between netbooks and full-size notebooks. Lenovo’s new IdeaPad U350 is a perfect example of this, as is MSI’s X-Slim series. A new report from an analyst firm suggests that the first generation models, like those noted above, may suffer from questionable quality. The report states that manufacturers are using plastic chassis’ to cut down on cost, which is certainly common, but are making the plastics so thin to save on size & weight that some systems may suffer from bottom covers cracking. This part of the Xbit Labs article puts it perfectly: Ultra-thin notebooks aimed at consumers is a completely new trend and many manufacturers still have not figured the exact demands of average users when it comes to ultra-portables. Nevertheless, one thing is clear: since consumer-oriented platforms have to be affordable, system makers are not implementing their state-of-the-art technologies, such as active hard disk drive protection, powerful yet light batteries and, most importantly, high-quality materials and robust engineering to keep the costs down.
While I had personally been drooling over the MSI X-Slim series, we found out that it is indeed a cheap, low quality machine with a sexy chassis and good feature-price ratio. Apparently the companies actually manufacturing the CULV notebooks, termed Original Design Manufacturers (ODM’s), had recommended to some PC companies that they use metal in the chassis to avoid this issue, but that production went ahead with plastic anyway. No company names are mentioned. A quick look at Lenovo’s PSREF documentation shows that the IdeaPad U350 is indeed made out of plastic, or specifically Polycarbonate/Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (PC/ABS) plastic. Fortunately there are not yet any reports of cracking systems in this case. Source: [Xbit Labs] Tags: culv, IdeaPad, ideapad u350, lenovo, msi, x-slim Posted in IdeaPad, Tech News | No Comments » | |
