Deal of the day: Lenovo IdeaPad U450p or Y450 $499

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

While we didn’t see any refresh of the IdeaPad U Series at CES 2010, the IdeaPad Y460 is coming soon and Lenovo’s working on moving those models out too. Today we present to you your choice of Lenovo’s IdeaPad U450p or Y450 for the low price of $499.

I really liked the Y450 I reviewed a while back. While it wasn’t super thin and light, the design was slick, the keyboard excellent and the overall quality very nice. If it had a Trackpoint, I would love to use it every day. ;) While the U450p is 0.3 inches thinner, it weighs the same and has a slower, less powerful processor.

The catch with the two configurations below is that while I’d like the Y450’s faster processor, it comes saddled with Vista and you’ll be forced to pay about $30 for your Win7 upgrade disks. The U450p, on the other hand, comes loaded with Win7 out of the box and will have Lenovo’s Enhanced Experience.

Deal of the day: Lenovo IdeaPad U450p well loaded $579

Lenovo IdeaPad U450p

Lenovo’s latest IdeaPad consumer notebook, the U450p CULV, announced over a month ago with an unintentional leak and went on sale shortly thereafter. The 14.1-inch notebook uses Intel’s low cost, low power dual core chips with a competitive set of features at a good price point. What helps this CULV laptop stand out in the crowded field is its 0.9-inch thickness despite being loaded with features and an integrated optical drive.

Just yesterday Lenovo released a new deal on the U450p, with $150 instant savings and a $70 stackable coupon that brings the price down to $579. That’s not a bad price for a 14-inch thin & light notebook that can handle most user’s needs with style. The coupon is good until October 5 or after 150 redemptions, whichever comes first. Specs and details on how to get the deal below

  • 14-inch WXGA 16:9 VibrantView | Pentium SU2700 1.3GHz
  • Vista Home Premium 32-bit | 3GB DDR3 | Intel X4500 graphics

Lenovo IdeaPad U450p

Lenovo’s IdeaPad U450p is their latest entry into the CULV field, sporting one of Intel’s low cost, dual core, Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) processors. Announced about a month ago, we found this slim notebook was sporting a 14-inch LED backlit display, up to 4GB RAM, up to 320GB in storage, and even has room for a slot-loading DVDRW drive in the 0.9-inch thin, 4.62 lb chassis.

Right now Lenovo is running a $150 instant discount on the U450p and also has a limited time 10% off stackable coupon. This brings the entry price down to only $584 for the new U450p. Check out the specs and details on how to get the deal below

Ending soon: 12% off new Lenovo IdeaPad U450p CULV laptop

Lenovo IdeaPad U450p

What started with a carelessly placed banner at the end of July became a full blown new product two weeks into August, and that new product is already on sale.

Lenovo’s IdeaPad U450p is a new 14-inch thin & light laptop based on Intel’s Consumer Ultra Low Voltage (CULV) platform. Utilizing inexpensive processors that use very little power, but not quite at the netbook level, these machines can be thinner and lighter with longer battery life than most notebooks, but come out to be cheaper than most “full-power” ultraportables.

While you can choose a base model (338926U) with Pentium SU2700 CPU, 3GB RAM, and 250GB hard drive, for $10 more you can get the Core 2 Solo SU3500, 4GB RAM with 64-bit OS, and 320GB hard drive (338928U). That is what I call a no-brainer.

All systems come with an LED backlit 14-inch LCD, VGA & HDMI output, 4-in-1 memory card reader, and 3 USB 2.0 ports. You even get a DVD burner in this 0.9-inch thin system, weighing in at a slightly hefty 4.62 lb.

  • Core 2 Solo SU3500 1.4GHz; 4GB DDR3; Vista Home Premium 64-bit
  • 320GB 5400rpm HDD; DVD recordable; Intel X4500 graphics
  • 14″ HD LED Anti-glare 1366×768; 6-cell battery; 802.11b/g

Datasheet found on new Lenovo IdeaPad U450p

Lenovo IdeaPad U450p

Earlier today we brought you news that Lenovo’s new IdeaPad U450p CULV laptop had surfaced, but there were some details missing and unclear. Someone uncovered a page out of the PSREF document for the U450p and we have the blanks filled in.

In addition to the 250GB and 320GB drives offered currently, the U450p will also come with a 500GB drive in certain models. The 14-inch 16:9 ratio LCD is indeed LED backlit, with a brightness of 220 nits and 500:1 contrast ratio. It appears the webcam is standard, with a meager 1.3MP resolution.

VGA and HDMI video outputs are included, with up to 2048×1536 external monitor resolution supported. The touchpad is multi-touch, as is becoming standard these days. A 4-in-1 card reader is included (MMC, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, SD) and three USB 2.0 ports take care of the rest of your expansion needs. Note that no ExpressCard slot is offered. Ethernet and WiFi are also standard. The optical drive is indeed not included in an Ultrabase, but is a 9.5mm integrated drive; much like the ThinkPad T400s, although not removable.

As for the size of this box, a U450p will measure out at 13.3 x 9.3 x 0.9-1.1 inches and weigh in at 4.62 lb. The chassis is disappointingly made of standard ABS plastic, none of the more exotic magnesium alloy & carbon fiber reinforced plastic like on the Y650. The weight is decent, but is a bit disappointing considering the thinness. The U450p has almost the exact same dimensions as the T400s, but gains nearly a pound due to the materials.

Lenovo’s IdeaPad U450p surfaces, details missing & on sale

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

u450p_banner

Initially leaked in a website banner, Lenovo’s new CULV IdeaPad U450p has surfaced online for purchase, although something doesn’t quite add up.

We knew this was going to be a 14-inch machine by the name, and the second leak indicated it was going to be powered by a ULV processor and have an integrated optical drive. Judging by the not very detailed image, it was also going to very thin. Details are still a bit scarce, but pretty much everything came true.

The U450p is available with either the Pentium SU2700 1.3GHz or Core 2 Solo SU3500 1.4GHz processors. The Core 2 should be a fair amount faster and offer a bit better battery life. Both systems use a 14-inch 16:9 ratio screen at 1366×768 resolution, likely LED backlit, and Intel X4500 graphics. The lower end model with the Pentium SU2700 has 3GB DDR3 RAM, 250GB HDD, and a Broadcom WiFi card for $799.

Another $100 buys you the Core 2 Solo chip, a 320GB HDD, Intel 802.11n WiFi Link 5100, 4GB DDR3, and Vista Home Premium 64-bit to take use the extra RAM.

What doesn’t make sense is the optical drive description: “DVD Recordable w/X6 Ultrabase.” I can guarantee you this machine doesn’t use an X6 Ultrabase, and likely no dock at all. The U450p should have an integrated optical judging by the header image description, but no further information is available at this time. Another win for the Lenovo.com website team.

If you want to jump on the bandwagon, there is a 10% off coupon available for the U450p as well. Hit the link below and use the following coupon code in the shopping cart, just make sure there are no spaces before/after the code: USPNOTEBOOKS. The code should be good through August 17th and brings the starting price of each model down to $719 and $809 respectively.

Lenovo IdeaPad U450p gets more official, another banner

Friday, July 31st, 2009

u450p_banner

A few days ago we brought you news of a possible new IdeaPad laptop which was subtly exposed in a Lenovo.com banner. Today the resourceful folks around the intarweb have exposed the landing-page-to-be for the new U450p, with a couple more details.

As you can see, the banner touts the 14-inch display that we knew was coming and while we figured it was going to be ultraportable, the ULV processor indicates Lenovo is aiming for ultrathin too. There’s even an optical drive, but what intrigues me is the phrase “nice 14″ display.” Do the copywriters just suck, or is that hinting at a better quality LCD? We can only hope.

Not too many 14-inch laptops lack an optical drive and the U450p won’t either, but it would have been interesting (if futile on Lenovo’s part) to see how such a machine did without an optical. It would save cost and size/weight, allowing them to perhaps invest the engineering elsewhere like battery capacity or opting for a Low Voltage processor instead of the more anemic ULV. To keep with the mainstream nature of consumer laptops, they also need to keep with a 2.5-inch hard drive, which is proving difficult in ultra-light machines.

Finally, if this is clearly not going to be a high performance model, why did they call it a U450p? I know this is just the ThinkPad purist in me speaking out, but the ‘p’ moniker is reserved for high performance models and the ’s’ for especially ultraportables. This should have been a U450s.

Stay tuned, we’ll bring you any updates on this new model as they come.

Lenovo leaks IdeaPad U450p – typo or slip-up?

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Lenovo IdeaPad U450p

A forum member over at NotebookReview forums was paying close attention to Lenovo’s sometimes-accurate website and noticed mention of a previously unannounced model: the IdeaPad U450p.

Lenovo doesn’t have a history of keeping things under its hat. Between unintentional leaks like the now defunct Lenovo 3000 V200 and planned teasing with the ThinkPad Reserve Edition, few things stay quiet. In fact, even the hot T400s was leaked by overseas pressbloggers.

For what it’s worth, in the header image on the IdeaPad series page, there is a non-descript image of a laptop labeled the U450p. If this is more than a typo, it will definitely have a 14-inch display, likely in a 16:9 ratio. While the folks at NBR are guessing at Intel graphics, I’m going to say the opposite. Lenovo has traditionally reserved the ‘p’ moniker for high performance models, always with high end graphics chipsets; the only catch here is that Lenovo hasn’t used that naming structure on any IdeaPads yet, only ThinkPads. A number of other manufacturers have stuffed discrete graphics into a 14-inch chassis, such as Asus, so that isn’t a concern either.

We’ll keep an eye and see if anything develops out of this.
