Lenovo IdeaPad Y650 Base Model

Early this week we mentioned a new IdeaPad Y650 “base model,” which appears to have lost some of the slick styling in exchange for high end guts and a lower price tag. If that weren’t enough, it’s on sale now too.

Until August 10th you can get the Y650 base model for only $799, making it an even more amazing value. I really liked the Y650 in my review and as long as it doesn’t lose the high quality magnesium/CFRP chassis, this is a great deal on an excellent multimedia notebook. Check out the specs and details on the deal below

  • Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53GHz | 4GB RAM | Vista Home Premium 64 (Free upgrade to Win7)
  • 16-inch LED LCD WXGA+ | Intel X4500 graphics | 320GB 5400rpm HDD
  • 6-cell battery | DVD burner | Intel WiFi 5100

New Lenovo IdeaPad Y650 “base model”

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Lenovo IdeaPad Y650 Base Model

Lenovo has quietly released a “base model” version of their svelte IdeaPad Y650 multimedia laptop.

When we reviewed the IdeaPad Y650 almost 2 months ago, it came across as a rather impressive 16-inch multimedia machine with a very thin & light chassis for its size. It was also one of the more expensive IdeaPads, generally priced above $1000, although still a value at those prices. Today we noticed that Lenovo has added a new version of the Y650, noted as a “base model.” If you go by specs alone, it is an extreme bargain: a faster processor, 64-bit OS, and bumped up to 4GB RAM for only $899? All it loses from the next model up, which runs $250 more, is Bluetooth. Wow.

Of course you don’t get something for nothing, and judging from the picture above, at the very least the base model loses some of the nifty exterior design work that gives the regular Y650′s their slick design and appeal. While losing only the detailed design work is absolutely worth $250, there are probably other concessions as well.

I am trying to confirm this with our contacts, but my biggest fear is that the amazing Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP)/magnesium-aluminum alloy chassis has been swapped for something else. While the features and performance of the Y650 would still be a bargain without it, that chassis is what makes the Y650 the flagship IdeaPad and a premium product in the marketplace.

  • Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 (2.53GHz)
  • Windows Vista Home Premium 64
  • Intel X4500 integrated graphics
  • 4GB DDR3
  • 320GB 5400rpm
  • 6-cell
  • Intel Wi-Fi Link 5100

Just a friendly reminder about our new regular feature, started this past Monday. This week we are seeking your feedback on Lenovo’s IdeaPad Y650. See the original post here for details and be sure to drop us a comment or two!

Feedback: What would you change about Lenovo’s IdeaPad Y650?

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Welcome to the first in a regular series: What would you change?

If the T Series is Lenovo’s flagship ThinkPad, the Y650 is their flagship IdeaPad. Sporting an extremely thin design for a 16-inch chassis, sleek design, and gorgeous LCD, it is a well featured multimedia machine at a competitive price.

But as we all know, nothing is perfect. Luckily the state of technology today is that everyone can have a voice and I am here asking for yours.

What would you change about Lenovo’s IdeaPad Y650?

There are a few “common” complaints about the Y650 and I myself have a few nigs against it. Leave your suggestions in the comments and I’ll collect them through the week. Come Friday, I’ll post the collective input along with my own views on the topic. Ready? Go!

Expires today: Lenovo IdeaPad Y650 for $799

Monday, July 6th, 2009

If you’ve read my review on Lenovo’s IdeaPad Y650, you’ll know I’m rather smitten with it. 16-inches of gorgeous LCD, sexy design, and HDMI output to boot? Well now is your chance to own one of these beauties for only $799 with free shipping. And this isn’t a stripped model either, as you can see in the specs below.

What’s the catch? This deal ends TODAY, or when 800 boxes have been ordered at this price. It’s worth noting their website calls for shipment in “4 weeks or more,” so this won’t be a “just-in-time” gift, but at this price I wouldn’t be complaining. Specs and deal details below

  • Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53GHz | Vista Home Premium 64
  • 4GB DDR3 | 320GB 5400rpm HDD | DVD Recordable
  • 6 cell Lithium-Ion | Intel Wi-Fi Link 5100

Unboxing: Lenovo IdeaPad Y450

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

We recently had a Lenovo IdeaPad Y450 arrive here at LogicThinkPads headquarters and I shot some pics of its eventful unboxing. There is also a very sexy IdeaPad Y650 present, so you’ll see a couple shots where we compare the thickness. If you don’t count the hefty feet on the bottom of the Y650, the chassis itself is actually thinner than the Y450.

Anywho – check out the pics below and look for our impressions of both systems soon! Do our faithful readers have any particular points of interest around these machines that we should mention? Are there any other Lenovo products you want us to get a look at? Drop us a line in the comments.
