Add a touch screen to your Lenovo S10 netbook

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Yes, the name of this site is thinkpads.com, but we try to share the love with the rest of Lenovo’s products too. And this is really cool, so it makes the cut.

A lovely fellow over at the Brain Dump blog just completed a screen transplant on his Lenovo IdeaPad S10 netbook. He used a kit available from Fido Hub that adds resistive touch capabilities and should fit most 10.2″ netbooks. He writes in detail about the install process and shares some helpful tips for anyone else who might want to attempt the upgrade. Unfortunately there were no juicy install pics, but if you do some searching there are others who have done the same upgrade on other netbooks.

What kind of modding have our dear readers done on their notebooks, Lenovo or otherwise?

Lenovo IdeaPad S10 Causing Noise Complaints

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Heat and noise are two of the biggest annoyances with laptops, and Lenovo’s laptops are not free from this problem. According to portablemonkey, the Lenovo forums have been flooded with complaints about the IdeaPad S10 netbook. According to the complaints, the fan incessantly spins up and down quite noisily. Lenovo has decided to pretty much ignore these complainers thus far, and some customers reported that they sent their laptop in to have this problem repaired and had it sent back to them in exactly the same condition.

That leads me to believe that it’s not a defect in the netbook, it’s simply a fact that the laptop will get hot and have to use the fan a lot even for less than challenging tasks. And that doesn’t surprise me – my own laptop is rather old with frighteningly netbook-like specs (1.7GHz CPU, 1GB DDR2 RAM) and I think twice about leaving it on while I sleep, even when it’s doing virtually nothing. The last non-surprise is that it bothers people and they complained about it, because it truly is annoying.

Maybe this is a greater issue though, and Lenovo will take care of it eventually. There’s no question that consumers would be happier with quieter laptops. Time will tell.
