Thursday, April 8th, 2010 Lenovo ThinkPad X300 compared to W700, to scale Right in line with shipping the tasty new W701 and W701ds models, Lenovo is heavily discounting the remaining last-generation ThinkPad W700 workstations. 25% off is a huge discount, but seems a bit less impressive when the W7xx models usually run well over $2000. This well loaded W700 starts at only $1999 before coupon, making the base price a mere $1499! You can see the nice set of base specs listed below, which includes the must-have WUXGA LCD, the very sweet color calibrator and even the WACOM digitizer built into the palm rest. You can also opt for things like faster dual and quad core processors, larger hard drives, additional hard drives with available RAID configuration and the usual wireless choices. This deal ends April 14th, or when 500 units have been sold. Details on how to get the deal are below Base specs- Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53GHz; Win7 Pro 64; 17-inch WUXGA LCD

Tags: ThinkPad W700 Posted in Laptop & Tablet PCs | 2 Comments » Wednesday, September 30th, 2009 Lenovo ThinkPad W700 Mini Dock 1.0 - should be visually identically to v2.0 The Mini Dock 2.0 has been quietly announced for Lenovo’s ThinkPad W700, with a few very minor changes made that actually make a difference in usability, for better and for worse. A cursory examination reveals all the same ports: four USB 2.0, eSATA, Gigabit Ethernet, analog & digital audio, VGA, DVI, and DisplayPort. However v2.0 utilizes a dual-link DVI-I port, allowing for analog compatibility over v1.0′s digital only dual-link DVI-D. This also means you can adapt the DVI-I port to VGA and utilize dual VGA monitors if you wish. The DisplayPort appears to now allow for adapting to DVI via a cable, as there is no warning about incompatibility with said adapter like on v1.0. So Lenovo made these minor, but effective changes and managed to drop the price from $279 to $219? Great! Oh wait, you might not get the bulky and pricey 170W power adapter included with Mini Dock 1.0. There is no mention of the power adapter with Mini Dock 2.0 and given how detailed these announcements are, you can take that for solid word there will be no adapter included. Lenovo may have done this to give customers more flexibility, as some customers may only need to use the adapter that came with the system, or maybe they have extras already. However in the end it adds cost for those who need the $119 secondary adapter. A Mini Dock 2.0 with the W700′s unique 170W power adapter will run you $59 more than a Mini Dock 1.0 with included power adapter, so if you have been considering a dock for your monster W700, it’s time to compare the features and pick your poison. The ThinkPad W700 Mini Dock 2.0 (PN 57Y4345) will be available on October 2nd at a list price of $219. It has a sizeable 17-inch screen, and an even more sizeable 1.6-inch thick, 8.4 lb frame. While mobile is more in definition than practice, this notebook will handle about anything you need with available quad core processors, WUXGA LCD, NVIDIA Quadro FX graphics, and even an optional digitizer built-in to the palm rest. More amazing than this machine’s size is its price. Lenovo is currently taking a massive $744 off the base price of the W700, along with a stackable 15% coupon that brings the entry price down to $1274. If you’ve ever laid your eyes on the Lenovo ThinkPad W700, you know it’s a monster of a laptop. It’s so big that Lenovo didn’t need to think twice when choosing a model to go dual screen with – as they did with the W700ds – because this laptop was so big that, hey, a little more weight could hardly hurt it. I’ve personally had a chance to work on the W700 and let me tell you, it is one capable laptop, with a built in digitizer, a beautiful bright LCD, a quad core extreme processor, and RAM up the wazoo among many other features. Compared to some smaller laptops I’ve worked on, it truly is a joy to use. But while it is “only” 17″ and 8.3lbs, the sheer physical size of it in conjunction with the large power cord and other accessories can make it very difficult to carry around. Arimasa Naitoh over at Yamato Thinking recently took his W700 on a road trip to see if it would be worth it. He chose it over the more portable ThinkPad X301, another laptop I’ve used and fallen in love with for completely different reasons. In the end, he found the ease with which it handled his CAD/design needs made the shoulder strain and funny looks at the airport worth it. Frankly, I’m not sure I could handle carrying around the W700 all day. It always seemed like a bedroom-to-living-room kind of portable laptop to me. But I guess it’s doable if you need to, and not just doable – well worth it, if Naitoh is to be believed. Have you had an experience transporting the W700? If so, how has it worked out for you?
