Given I’m swarming in laptops for review & testing I have no need to buy one, but it’s still fun to play around. Keep in mind this isn’t a “dream” laptop. They are eminently portable and generally don’t lose much in functionality to get so thin & light. The X200 series is the pinnacle of that: 0.8-inches thin and starting just under 3 lb. It does get a bit thick towards the rear at 1.4-inches, but you don’t notice it on account of the featherweight chassis.
If that’s not thin & light enough for you, the X200s can be had from 2.43 lb. If you tack on the slightly hefty 9-cell battery, you’ll also be pleased with battery life that should break the 10 hour mark. Did I mention you get all this with full power processors and standard 2.5-inch hard drives, for around a grand well equipped? Now is your chance to pick up an X200 or X200s for a cool $849 after a 15% coupon. Unfortunately Lenovo stripped both models a bit to get the price down. As priced you get atrocities like Vista Home Basic and 1GB RAM, along with no Bluetooth, a 4-cell battery, and 160GB 5400rpm hard drive. You will definitely want to pick up Vista Home Premium for the free Windows 7 upgrade and the 6-cell battery offers a nice compromise of size and battery life. The X200s model is also the “Enhanced” version, which comes with the Core 2 Duo ULV processor running at 1.4GHz, rather than wimpier Celeron version that can be had for about $735 with this same coupon. Lenovo’s ThinkPad X200s is one of the most portable and still functional computers on the market. Weight starts at only 2.47 lb, but you have 3 USB ports, VGA out, modem, Ethernet, Bluetooth, WiFi, WiMax, and 3G available to connect you to nearly anything and everything. The optional Ultrabase adds an Ultrabay for optical or hard drives and even has DisplayPort output for the big LCD on your desk. Lenovo has quietly begun adding Intel’s Consumer Ultra Low Voltage (CULV) processor to their ThinkPad X200s business notebooks. It was way back at the end of April, eons ago in tech-time, when word was leaking that the X200 was to be outfitted with one of Intel’s new low cost, CULV processors. A few weeks later, the X200s popped up with an uber-low-end Celeron M chip to bring the price point down to $999. We thought this is what the rumor was referencing and went on about lives, blissfully unaware. Carefully stalking every Lenovo webpage, today we noticed that the X200s has a new processor option. If you go with the “Enhanced” X200s, the default processor is now the Intel Core 2 Duo SU9400, whereas before you could only choose the Core 2 Duo SL9400. While you give up a fair amount of performance, my opinion is that most users don’t even dip into the full performance of their processors. I didn’t happen to jot down the price before the SU9400 was added, so the $75 upgrade to the faster processor might not be quite the savings it seems. Still more choice is good and most people should be plenty happy with the 1.4GHz SU9400, saving at least some money in the process. Disclaimer: both the Enhanced and Elite models of the X200s are showing as more than 4 weeks before shipment and it looks like the unique WXGA+ panels used on those models are to blame. The WXGA-equipped base model has only a 9 day wait listed, but your only choices there are the truly pokey Celeron M or the Core 2 SL9400 for another $375. Tags: culv, thinkpad x200s
