Wired.com: One glaring flaw with the IdeaPad Y650

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Lenovo IdeaPad Y650

Wired has gotten its hands on one of Lenovo’s new IdeaPad Y650′s and seems to find only one glaring fault:

But it was during the battery rundown that we uncovered the laptop’s most egregious flaw: a warning tone that’s ear splittingly loud and tonally on par with a smoke alarm. This high-decibel beep occurs when you insert or remove the power cord and when the battery is about to go kaput.

They also had plenty of other lovely things to say about it, so hit the link for a quick read. All in all, the initial reviews hitting the net seem to be pretty positive. For our U.S. readers considering a purchase, remember the Y650 is on sale at $1,099 for three more days.

New IdeaPad Y650 on sale $400 off

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Lenovo IdeaPad Y650

It wasn’t long ago that we were reporting on the first reviews of the Y650 trickling in and Lenovo is already putting this little vixen on deep discount. Claiming the Y650 to be the thinnest and lightest 16″ notebook around (even beating out HP’s very own 16-inch G60t), you can now get theĀ 418534U model for $1,099, down from it’s regular price of $1,499. Check out the specs below and hit the link for details on how to get this deal.

More IdeaPad Y650 reviews rolling in

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

More reviews of Lenovo’s IdeaPad Y650 are finally appearing – just in time for the Y650 sale.

All told, the Dell XPS Studio we tested has a slight edge thanks to its available Blu-ray drive, 1080p screen, better gaming performance, and longer standard warranty (three years versus one year for the IdeaPad). But it’s also $400 more than the IdeaPad Y650. If you care about high-definition movies or 3D games, you’ll appreciate that you can get the Y650′s design, features, and performance at an attractive price.

ComputerShopper

That said, the Y650 is thinner and lighter than any other 16-inch notebook we’ve seen … and the discrete graphics card in this machine is perfectly capable of handling HD video decoding and digital audio out over HDMI for watching movies on your HDTV. If you’re looking for an attractive entertainment notebook for your family the Y650 makes a great choice, but if you need a high-end gaming notebook this isn’t it.

jkOnTheRun shares IdeaPad Y650 first impressions

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Lenovo IdeaPad Y650

Since Lenovo’s IdeaPad Y650 announced almost a month ago, there doesn’t appear to have been any press or user reviews of the multimedia-oriented notebook.

The guys over at jkOnTheRun got a Y650 in their hands and blogger James Kendrick has shared his impressions over the first 24 hours of use. James covers his inital Likes and Dislikes of the machine, including what seems to be a technical problem with the touchpad. Since IdeaPads don’t have the ThinkPad’s lovely pointing nub, aka TrackPoint, the touchpad is rather important to the machine’s usage. Take a gander on over for more details.

As a reminder, the IdeaPad Y650 is a new 16-inch multimedia notebook from Lenovo. The display’s pixels are arranged in a 16:9 format, all the new rage for ideal movie viewing and also cheaper to produce given that is the same ratio used for TV LCD’s. The usual array of processors, memory, and hard drive are available along with available NVIDIA graphics and a standard DVD burner.
