I think the HD change was a red herring. I tried a couple of restarts and it locked up. I also plugged in the battery while running and that locked up too.

Gave up and got a T430 on Ebay. It's such a crapshoot but got one that was OK. I thought this was an interesting tactic, coloring the worn corners with felt pen, very difficult to see in the photos. It was actually very clean inside and had good plastics.
