Re: W701 overheating
Did 'cleaning it up' include a thorough vacuuming of the in/out air slots feeding the fans? If not, you'd be surprised how big of a diff this can make. I recently did this to one of my W700s and had the gpu temps drop a whopping 20 degrees. Crevice attachment on your vacuum, suck crud from all of th...

USB keyboard trackpoint physically hard to move - help(!)
Hi all - I have a USB keyboard(p/n 55y9053) on which the trackpoint is very difficult to move. I'm talking hard to push the actual trackpoint stick, not anything to do with the Windows/Tpad sensitivity settings. I've swapped out the red cap w/another USB keyboard that works and also tried the keyboa...

When you click on the tray icon to disconnect an ultrabay device, a list of the eligible devices appears and you click on the specific device. Very easy, not much to it; just be sure you select the correct device. I used to run an A31p with mucho extra goodies hooked up to is(similar to you) and it ...

Re: Dual External Monitor - 2 Display Port
I'm not familiar with the X220, but have setup multiple monitors on other Thinkpads. If you want to drive multiple monitors off of -one- display port, you have to use a splitter, of which the most common is the Matrox DualHead2Go DP edition. Typical street price is $200+, off of ebay, etc. Be aware ...

Can I get Win7 on new Tpad after Win8 is released?
Just saw a blurb on TV that MSFT is scheduled to release Win8 on Oct. 26, 2012. Anyone know how long(if at all) Lenovo will overlap with Win7 such that I could buy a -new- Thinkpad with Win7 installed, vs. Win8 ? Don't wanna be bleeding edge here on this one, and Win7 does exactly what I need it to ...

The guy(s) posting these for sale on ebay are still doing so cuz they've overpriced 'em so much no one will buy them. If you're really interested in one, hit 'em up with a msg/email and a lowball price and see if they're motivated yet. Price-wise, these will only go down over time, so these clowns a...

You need to search the W520 posts, where you'll find actual cases of people who've run into the RAID/No RAID mboard issue. At this point, it's -likely-, but not set in stone that this carries over to the new W530. BUT, since people don't yet have these in their grubby little hands, we just don't kno...

Re: W530 RAID
Seems to be the case. Some confusion because when the W700/W500 line came out, you could add in RAID yourself after the purchase. However, on the newer models, you do have to order it with/without RAID. So, you can't do what you wanna do, you have to pony up $$$ for extra stuff you don't want, in or...

call Lenovo, see if they can help. If still under warranty, they should be obligated to help. Maybe they can point you to the correct additional code/drivers/etc. Can't be that hard, as when the W700s were still in production, there were several threads floating around on how to setup RAID. So, is p...

For those with their panties in a wad over this one, consider picking up an external USB keyboard, while they last. Very nice for home/stationary usage.

Oh, I see... I never really thought about doing what you're trying to do. I just tested with my T400 and I can do the opposite of what you're trying to do (turn off the external monitor) easily enough without disturbing anything. The easiest thing to do if you want to pretty things up before/after ...

Re: How to turn off ONE monitor in a multi-monitor setup.
I don't understand what you are trying to do. If you dim the laptops monitor so that you can't see it or close the lid, you don't have the use of the laptops screen. So there is no practical difference from doing a monitor switch using the F7 key. * At times, I want to use both screens in extended ...

Re: How to turn off ONE monitor in a multi-monitor setup.
^ Thanks for the ideas. For some reason, dimming didn't work for me. So, I guess the thing to do is to make the external monitor my main screen and prior to closing the laptop lid, minimize all windows on the laptop so they don't pollute the external monitor. Not exactly what I'd like, but workable ...

Re: Price Check: Z61p
Hardware-wise, Z61p is the equivalent of T60p, not T61p. The only thing that would equal T61p is the screen. Z60 is a widescreen T43. Z61 is a widescreen T60. Yes, the numbers are confusing... Ah, I see. But still, the T60p seems to be much more popular than Z61p. Is this mostly because of the 4:3 ...

Re: How to turn off ONE monitor in a multi-monitor setup.
Not sure this will work, just a guess. How about setting power manager to "do nothing" when the laptop lid is closed? Still, closing the lid will cause the lid switch to turn the lamp off, but the desktop on that monitor shouldn't be affected....maybe. Something else you might want to try is Monito...

You ought to be able to hit Fn-F7 to cycle through the available display modes (Laptop on, external off / both on / laptop off, external on), at least if they're like all the T-series machines I've ever owned. How to turn off ONE monitor in a multi-monitor setup.
Hi all - I have Win7 running on a W700 and WinXP on a Z61p and have multiple monitors hooked up to both laptops. Re: Intel pushes for high pixel density
Try viewing a T221 or VP2290 screen and you'll realize just what the diff is.
3840x2400 and you won't wanna go back.
Unfortunately, these monitors are not practical to use today, but the pixel count and image quality is really something.

Re: Thinkpad W510 CAN drive 3840x2400 through displayport
I don't have availability of a docking station to try all of this with, but eventually will try what I posted above about using one of the DualHead2Go DP splitters, connected to the DP port on my W700. This would(I think) drive the monitor at full 3840x2400 at 25Hz. Not optimum, but marginally ok. N...

Do a search on the ATI V5200 series. Seems I recall those fitting into the dock slot.
Long cards won't fit in that thing, so you have to be careful what you use.

Re: Can Windows 7 run on a server box with a Xeon chip?
I scrapped this approach due to excessive costs. These days, one can get mboards for the i-7, consumer, non-Xeon chips that have enough slots for 64G memory, which means a much lower cost for the total computer. My next 'puter will come in under $2000, which would be impossible with Xeon chips/platf...

Re: Max resolution on docked W520 with external monitor?
The W520 PSREF doc is very specific in listing -max- external resolutions. Cut/paste from the PSREF: Maximum external resolution: 2560x1600 (DisplayPort)@60Hz; 2048x1536 (VGA)@85Hz; 1920x1200@60Hz (single-link DVI-D via cable 45J7915) So, looks like you'll need to connect through the DP port...
