Updated with 2026 state.
Selling my Thinkpad T61 15.4'' with T9900, HW modded for 1066MHz FSB, Intel X3100 graphics, 1280x800.
It's the machine I modded on September 2016, as reported here. See my posts there for detailed test reports and BIOS/RAM changes for the machine.
This is T61 Type 6463-CTO S/N L3-F0624 07/12, powerful configuration:
- Bluetooth
- GSM modem, Sierra Wireless WWAN Adapter MC8775 Tri band HSDPA UMTS (850/1900/2100MHz)
- PCMCIA/CardBus slot
- ExpressCard slot
- 4 in 1 Card Reader
- FireWire
- Win 7 Pro readible COA sticker
- 4GB (2x 2GB) Kingston memory stick with Samsung SPD profile
- Crucial M500 240GB SSD, health at 96%
- not sure about this 1280x800 display type, it's matte, screen is visible at all angles and the picture quality is great
- WiFi card replaced with 5G Intel 3945AGB
Works with nVidia GTX 670 eGPU via ExpressCard (runs Witcher 3 smoothly on medium settings, 4GB RAM required), no problems with Hackintosh installtion of OS X Lion 10.7.6.
It runs Win10 and feels very smooth. Edge browsing is very responsive. Overall it works much better than my Yoga 11e with N5000 on Win11.
This machine comes with following drawback:
- when shutting down the machine it turns off and then after 7-10 seconds it turns on automatically. It happens only when power adapter is unplugged. Battery removal is required not to let it power up again. It's not related to HW mod, the same was happening before the HW mod. Not bothering enough for me to take care of it.
- fan error on boot, press esc to continue - it wasn't present until last years
- CPU fan got grumpy, I think it's dying
- one visible and few barely visible bright spots on the right side of the screen
- minor dust ingress in the top right corner of the screen
- heavily scratched top cover
- loose display hinges c.a. 2cm
- battery died after all these years
- no power adapter included
I wasn't using the machine for all these years, just turning it once a year to check how well it is. Looks like it wasn't enough to keep the battery alive.

I can add my Crucial M500 240GB SSD. It's the drive shown in all reports above.
HWinfo reports the drive's remaining life is 97%. It works with full SATA2 speed: write speed is 240MB/s (bonnie++, sequential write). Boots Win7 to login screen in 14s, Ubuntu14 in 9s.
