[FS] ThinkPad 600X for parts

#1 Post by ThinkRob » Sat Dec 16, 2017 1:37 pm

For sale is a ThinkPad 600X with a 500 MHz CPU. The screen is 1024x768, but it's also some 16+ years old, so it's starting to dim a bit. Still bright enough to use once it's warmed up for a few seconds, but I can tell that the backlight is starting to tire a bit. It would be a good candidate for an LED backlight mod if you're trying to do a resto-mod or something. No dead pixels or signs of controller failure.

Cosmetically the laptop is in decent shape, *EXCEPT* for the fact that the rubberized coating has started to degrade. You know that sort of tacky, cheese-like consistency that happens with things like butyl rubber "non-slip" inserts on power tools and the like? Same thing here. Obviously this makes it a non-dailyable sort of laptop, hence the parts listing. It's also missing one or two of the port covers because, well, adhesive fails over time.

The keyboard is in good shape. Some signs of use (key shine), but when I last tested it all the keys worked and it felt like it should.

The laptop does not come with a drive, but I may be able to rustle up an IDE drive from my parts shelf if you need one.

In addition to a charger, it will come with a battery, but the 600 series were notorious for terrible batteries even when new, and this one's been sitting for almost two decades, so I'd plan on the battery being more for decoration than anything else. ;)

I'm listing it for parts because of the physical issues with it, but it does boot and run last I checked. Someone with more time than I (and also, like, a paint booth) could probably strip down the coating and re-spray it. (As I recall, you'll want a mix of something like 2 parts Plastidip, 5 parts black plastic-adherent paint, and a tiny touch of Pearl Ex 633/634 for a slight sparkle effect. But further experimentation will be requied...)

As far as price... I'm listing it because I'm trying to clean out my electronics storage, and I'd hate to just throw out something that might be useful to other ThinkPad nerds. So let's say $25 plus whatever it costs to ship it to you. (USPS and UPS are ideal. I don't have a convenient FedEx dropoff near me.)

Payment (in order of preference): cash, USPS money order, PayPal, personal check drawn on US bank (long-time forum members only for the last one, please.)

Let me know if you need any other information, or if you want to buy.
