Reasons why IBM is the best for ME!

#1 Post by D3c » Sat Apr 23, 2005 3:08 pm

Hey,

I think we should have a topic where everybody could write their reasons why IBM notebooks are the best. This would also be a good topic to look at when trying to make other people buy IBM :)

I'll start with some reasons:

- The design is flawless
- The keyboard is the best you can get
- Very high security-level (e.g. fingerprint reader)

.. you guys continue the list (copy-add-paste)

I don't want to spoil the thread by saying that IBM notebooks are not necessarily the best, but are very very good overall. It may be the best for certain users, categories and such.

For example, IBM is not the best multimedia notebook you can get. There are many features that it lack to be the best in such tasks. E.g. it lacks firewire, only 2 USB ports that are cramped, not the most aesthetic look as a multimedia. Also it is not the best gaming machine either.

However, for business, student, and engineers it is the best notebook that you can get to get your job done. Keyboard feel, high security to protect your data and so on.

I simply love IBM due to its design that allows users to simply exchange and replace every single parts on the notebook. I have yet to come across a notebook that is so well designed for user maintainance.

For serious work I would recommend anyone to go with IBM. For other multimedia / home tasks I think there are other notebooks with better features with wide screens to meet their entertainment purposes.

A lot of other companies are catching up to IBMs quality and engineering. I am worried how the future of IBM-Lenovo will change the status of IBM notebooks.

I agree. I like my ThinkPad because it works for me and does everything I want. But other people have other needs. So we should purchase what fits us, and leave be at that. ... JD Hurst

Well, as for the USB problem, you could always expand (to a certain extent) with a USB hub that hardly weighs anything and is the size of a business card.

Here are my reasons, in roughly chronological order rather than in order of importance:

Dells are too expensive.
Compaqs are too poorly made.
I don't have the knowledge to build from scratch.

I need something Linux-Friendly and everybody on my all my Linux forums seems to love these IBM thinkpads. Hmmm....I never even thought about an IBM before....maybe someday...

I don't need the newest fastest Windows machine on the block now that I'm not running Windows much any more so I need something that still runs reliably after Windows users are done with their old PIIs.

That does it! No more Dells for political reasons.
That does it! No more Compaqs for political reasons.

My thinkpad will find me when it's ready.
Maybe I should start saving my pennies toward a goal.
OMG!!!! I can afford a PIII!!!!!!
You mean it's really THAT easy to work on?
I wonder if I can find a user's forum?

I'm so excited I'd better shut up now or I'll get banned before it even gets here.

On (first) edit:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=11206 <---That does it! More IBMs for political reasons!

When my T21 is cherried out and my budget recovers, I'm going to start looking for that PII for my son. Much as I love the concept of retrobox, where thinkpad #1 is coming from, I hope I can afford an old junker from Bill next time because I want to support this community.

Nice bunch of people. Pat yourselves on the back. I haven't been flamed once in spite of myself and I've already found a significant number of the parts I need to cherry out my T21, just waiting for the postman before I update my siggie. :D

This is why I chose my current thinkpad.

-The looks. You cant beat the black.
-Build quality
-Light wheight and slim design
-IBM service. Next business day.
-A good, reliable product that won't quit on me during projects.

..and I absolutely love this notebook. Hardly think that I'll ever buy another brand. Unless Lenovo makes a mess of the thinkpads, of course. But it's highly unlikely.

I bought my first, a 355 back in 1995 because I wanted a notebook, figured if I bought IBM I'dd at least have a chance of a good one even if used.
Bought my first 755CD off ebay in 1998 because I felt the need to upgrade to Win95 and a color screen so I could unhook the external moniter. The fact that hard drives and memory interchanged didn't hurt. The 760CD because of the big tft screen, it worked fine till lightning zapped it, on tearing it down I found lots of loose screws and other signs it musta been thrown together from functioning but substandard parts and yet till the end it worked fine.
The 701C, well, if ya have to ask........................
The 600 because the price point got within reach and it is one heck of a machine!
All came with keyboard with better feel than most desktop keyboards, I'm using a clicky PS/2 board on my desktop to write this.
The black may look cool but what I really like is the grippy texture that makes it much easier to hang on to.
I will continue to buy Thinkpads for their build quality, online support, supply of replacement parts and the nice people willing to share their wisdom.

That and nobody thinks its neat if you use a 3 years old Acer but just last week several were wowed by the Butterfly.

Every other notebook I've touched in a store lacks build quality (Flimsy paper bending feeling)
The keyboard is massively superior
Black looks better than silver/blue and silver/black (I rather see black cameras instead of the silvery ones as well, infact, most appliances should be black colored)
Trackpoint (Number one reason I got a Thinkpad)
My dad had one, I loved it
Durable, very durable (As mentioned above, most lappys are flimsy)
3 years warranty STANDARD (90 days standard? Ack!) +3 more (6 total here)
IBM/Lenovo doesn't have "autovoid" warranty that voids if you installed new RAM, then reports it back to the "mothership" (I know someone that had that happen once... Evil people)
No widescreens (Eeww)
Lightweight and smaller than simlarly spec notebooks
Friendly community (This message board)
Nice useful programs (Instead of BLOATWARE)
Warranty + Reputation
Edit:Boxy! (Like Volvos, boxy shaped, I like boxy things for some reason)
It can play games if needed
User maintance friendly (Like the RAM part. Doesn't autovoid)
Durable enough to use as self defense (Inside joke with my friends)
Hot swappable bay (Multiburner to Harddrive, they should make a PCMCIA card expansion slot, or multiple card reader, the possblitys are endless here)
Re-Edit (Still have many reasons)
First laptop I touched was my dad's company given IBM (Then his own, he enjoyed the company T30 so much, he got his own)
Actual copper heatsink + heatpipes (Good heat disapation)
The bare hinge (Looks pretty durable)
Speakers aren't half bad (Somewhat close to my Creative Inspire 5.1 5300 series, pretty good for laptop speakers)
Thinklight actually not a useless feature (I can see my keyboard with it)
Pretty informative display thats not ultra fancy (Wireless, numberlock, capslock, harddrive, power, battery, suspend/hibernate)
IR Port (Infact, more cellphones use IR than Bluetooth!)

That pretty much lists the other things I want to say
